Windows 98 SE would be marginally faster for office tasks, but Windows 2000 will be "smoother" in multitasking though slightly slower. It will definitely be more stable and secure than 98SE, of course. Before you accuse me of ignorance, I've run both on a desktop with 128MB of RAM and a slow (older 5400RPM) hard disk. My opinion is to try Win2k (even without adding RAM), and see if you like it. If it's a little too slow for your taste, try to add some more RAM. But by all means, stay away from Win9x.Originally posted by: Zucarita9000
98SE will be faster and smoother. 2k will be much more stable and reliable.

128Mb RAM on XP is fine for using Notepad or maybe solitaire, word chugged very badly. Added another 128MB stick on my old P3 733 and everything ran fine.

Anandtech members tend to overstate requirements of everything. According to them, you need a 1ghz PC with a GeForce2 to play the original halflife![]()
