This suddenly happened last night, apparently after installing Nero 5.5 (full version) to replace OEM, although I can't be sure as the machine is always on and hasn't been restarted for over a week. Anyway, the symptoms are that many desktop shortcuts are missing (but not all of them); many startup items (those NOT in the Startup folder) are missing; Norton Antivirus won't let me start or configure it, saying I need to be a Supervisor. After some playing around, copying profiles and creating new users, the desktop icons are back, but the startup items and various other registry-related items are still missing. The NTuser.dat file is in my profile but it seems not to be loaded at startup.
Any idea what has caused this and how to fix it. I know I could go for a reinstall, but that will take a long time since I've got a lot of stuff on the system and I don't know what programs are configured per-user rather than whole machine (Norton obviously!).
