I just reformatted a friends computer and loaded windows 2000 professional back onto his computer but the color only shows 16-bit.. what can i do to get that to go to 256-bit or high color 16 bit and to be able to make the screen larger to make it 1024x768 instead of 800x600.

i also posted this in the technical forums but i need a quick solution so i thought this would get higher traffic.

thanks for your help

the driver you install depends on the manufacturer of the video card. go to the manufacturers website. if it is integrated video go to your mobos website. the w2k drivers will be there.

You can try when the PC boots in the BIOS the first thing itll say are the Video card specs.

Or you can try by pulling the card out of the computer and looking on the PCB (the video card board) and its stamped on the card.

1st of all how old is the computer? If its a p1 machine, then it maybe a old s3 video card. Is the video card onboard (means is it on the comptuers motherboard its-self). If you can get a download of nvidia and ati drivers not the .exe but the files itself. Once you get that run HARDWARE SETUP WIZARD on each folder to see if the drivers are in the folderes for ati or nvidia (for that card). If so then install which ever drivers are right or just use the proper .exe for ati or nvidia.. Hope this helps.
