Here's my frustration.

My motherbaord died while in Windows, which means I didn't have a chance to uninstall any drivers. Changed out the motherboard, and of course, device drivers had to be reloaded. For network device, it installed fine, but the connection shows up as "Local Area Connection 2." The adapter shows up as "3Com Etherlink 10/100 PCI (3C905-TX) #2."

1. I go into the TCP/IP properties.
2. Set my staic IP (cause it's a domain controller)
3. Click "OK" to apply the setting.
4. Go right back into TCP/IP properties and both the IP settings and DNS settings are set back to "Obtain automatically."

I've uninstalled the adpater, removed it, put a Netgear FA311 adapter in a different PCI slot, installed the drivers...same frustration. Aaaaahhhhh!!!

Is there any hope for me?

you should have booted the new motherboard into safe mode first to remove the devices. sorry I don't know what the solution might be - you tried everything i can think of.

you may still be able to boot it into safe mode and fix it, I would try booting into safe mode and yanking out all network cards from the device manager. Hopefully that will allow it to reinstall correctly.

There have to be more steps you could take with it but they escape me right now (ask me again this afternoon when my brain reaches 100% capacity).
