Windows 2000 reports 512MB RAM as 511.5?

When I boot, the bios reports I have 524288 (/1024 = 512) but Windows 2000 Task Manager shows total physical memory as 523760 = 511.48. Why does Windows show less?

What mobo do you have? Are you using integrated video? Your mobo could be sharing that memory with another device.

Soyo 6BA+IV BX board with Highpoint ATA-66. Video card is Asus V6800 DDR Deluxxx. Could this be something shadowed in the bios using up 1/2 MB of RAM? What else?

Any Windows 2000 users with less RAM reported than installed?

Checked the bios. Nothing shadowed. Video bios & system bios cache disabled. Any ideas?

Both of my computers show 523764, but system properties shows 512MB.

hmm strange, mine shows 523744K also in Win2K

Thanks a lot John. I'm relieved that I probably don't have bad RAM but now I'm just curious. Any idea why this happens? Is Windows reserving a little RAM for its own nefarious purposes (like caching my cookies to relay info to MS )?

Mine also shows 523760k. Don't think it matters but it is interesting that some show this but others don't.
