Believe me, you want Win2k Pro ;)

After years of Win95/98, I got a copy of Win2k and haven't experienced even 1% of the amount of crashes and configuration errors.

So far nothing negative to report about Win2k, except that it's a typical Windows OS: it only crashes when it shouldn't :p

I'd recommend the upgrade. I hate the directory trees, but a bit of tweaking and hiding fixed that. I still can't figure out how to get rid of the desktop though :frown:. I haven't had many problems with crashes and whatnot. It's about as stable as a M$ product can be I guess.

win2k pro in it's RC (release candidate) stages was just as stable as NT4 SP4, which is saying a lot. I still remember the day it went gold. i've been running win2k 24-7 for the last year straight, and its only crashed twice. ONCE because the power went off and didn't come back on before my UPS ran out of juice, and the SECOND time because i tried to run an unsupported 3d game.

win2k is a most impressive OS..it combines win98's best features with NT4's stability. you can't go wrong (unless your a hardcore gamer, in which case some game still aren't fully supported)

Some of the kids are swept up in win2k fever, please excuse them. It could be a good upgrade for you but post the specs of your computer and we'll see if its up to it! How much ram you have is a big issue...

You might want to make sure you computer meets the minumum requirements. Win 2000 pro is MUCH better but it also takes more resorces to run. What processor and how much ram do you have?

well, if it's anything close to an Athlon 750, and if it has at least 128 megs of RAM, win2k pro should run just fine for you

I'm running Win2k and love it, but since you're late in the game you might want to wait for Whistler. From what I've seen of the pre-beta2 versions, it looks like it's shaping up pretty well. Beta2 is due out in about 2 hours.

Win2k is like no other operating system I've ever used. When I finally rebooted last night I had an uptime of 220 hours (about 1 1/2 weeks) and then only reason I rebooted is because I made a change to my registry and had to. I had not experienced any slowdown or lockups within that period of time. Probably the best Windows OS we've ever had.

you might want to wait for Whistler.

So what is she supposed to use until then? DOS? Or put off buying the computer completely until Whistler is due out? C'mon. It sounds like she's either buying the computer or building it, probably soon. So if you're going to shell out money for the operating system you might as well get WIN2K. If I were eakers I wouldn't waste money on win95 or 98. Just go with win2k. Then whenever whistler comes out she can start a new thread and again, ask our opinion of it and find out if it's actually worth the upgrade.

I've been running Win2k since April at work, and the machine has rebooted twice, both times because of power outages... :) It's been running continuously for at least a few months now, something you could never do with Win98. If you're going to upgrade though I'd recommend 256MB of memory over 128. You'd definitely notice a speed increase...
