Windows 2000 problem with directory names

How do you rename/remove directories under Windows 2000 which have non-standard characters in them?

E.g. If there is a '?' or ':' in a directory name, how can you get rid of them?

How did those characters get into a directory name in the first place? They are not valid characters for a directory name and the only time I have seen them appear in a name was on corrupt volumes. Just out of curiosity what happens when you try to delete or rename them?

What I think happened is your machine had an error and created backups of some files. Mine had a file with some indistinguishable characters in it and some Windows writing. It was called $LDR$ and it resided in WINNT. It said something about not enough extended memory and a bunch of mumbo-jumbo I don't care to share. I've been fooling with my vcache and paging file, so I guess it might be normal?

BTW, what's a good setting for vcache in w2k? how bout 98? hehe...

Colleague opened anonymous FTP on an FTP server, and within days it was 'tagged' (marked by a cracker as his personal warez domain).

With some luck I can be the one telling the manager who made that decision off 😀

Edit: With a combination of tools from the resource kit we managed to remove the directories, we closed the anonymous FTP, and we notified the ISP from which the attack took place. It was an ISP for companies only, so judging from that fact, as well as the name of the machine, one of their customers had a compromised firewall.

What a great idea!! or better yet--so ppl don't get distracted from their off-topics--AT could implement some sort of a priority message system link from some of the lesser important rooms. It'll blink a red light when somebody's pc crashes. A yellow light when another one can't get on the net. And just a green one when it's anything else.

Speaking of lights, I heard that red is the most relaxing color. Makes a lotta sense to make a stoplight red.
