Was wonder when you all install win2000 as your first OS and you have all your main drivers installed. What are some tweaks that you feel are must.

Can you still dual boot when you install win2000 as your first os.
I've always done it with win98se first or winme. Can still be done very easy?

How do all you do it.

P.S
One other question i have a epox 8kta2 and was wondering do have to install via bus master drivers in win2k. Doesn't seem like there supported. Do you still get the same performance without them

Sorry about the multiple questions!!!

Thankyou for all your help
Jason

if i am not mistaking, you MUST have a Win9x OS installed first, and then Win2k installed next on the next partition or drive. please correct me people if i am wrong....

You can install Win98 or ME on a different partition now. It will write over the win2K bootloader so you'll have to use the repair Win2k installation feature on the win2K disk. Its easy to due and you won't loose any data..

David you done that successfully.
Just go threw the typical install of windows98 but install it on a different partion. Then go threw the win2k recover?

Even though you install win98se or me on say drive other then c: it will still boot striaght to that drive not even looking at drive c: where win2k is installed?

Thankyou for all you help

Just a tip, make a Win2K repair disk, since the repair option wont allways find your installation, and without a rescue disk you're SOL.

When you dual boot, it always looks at drive C first. The information on the C drive tells it where to boot from. For example, if you install Win2k on C, then install Win98 on D, it will look on C first. What it finds on C will tell it to boot Win98, which is on the D drive. However, if C is NTFS, which Win98 cannot read, then your dual boot will fail.

Consequently, you usually want to install Win98 on the C drive.

paulip88 is right.. If ya do an install now of Win98 onto drive D you won't be able to boot into either OS. But with a windows2000 disk you can do a repair install which will write a new boot.ini file onto drive C: which will allow you to boot into Win2K again. Then just edit the boot.ini file from within windows2k and ad the win98.. The repair option might add both OS's to the .ini file itself. Not sure.. I have done this but I alway my first partition a 500mb boot\swap file drive.

I tried doing a repair using the EBD and it didn't work.

I rebuilt my Win98 partition (C) last weekend, went to repair the boot record by booting off the Windows 2000 CD, using the repair option(s) with EBD - and.... nothing. Made no difference at all. Every time I tried it the machine would boot directly into Windows98. I think I tried all the options given to me by the system console.

Any suggestions?

Pretty much! Here's the steps, just to clarify.

Exisiting 98/2K dual boot on C and D of a 5 partition drive.

Format and reinstall 98 on C

Boot off the W2K CD (and it's a bought full-retail version, not a copy), try the repair option(s). Console prompts for EBD, reads it for a while then reboots the machine (with a warning that it's about to do so).

Back up, still boots directly into 98.

Tried the 'fast' and manual repairs, each time with the same result. EBD was created directly before wiping C to reinstall 98.

When installing W98 or ME as the second OS using the "install /ntldr" would cause the installer to install itself in the bootloader.

My problem is I have win2k on drive c: with ntfs and was wondering whats the best way to get winme on another partintion.

Is it true that if I install winme unto another partion that then it will screw up my boot area and I will have to run win2k repair and then after that everything will be cool. Or am I looking at a big disaster.

Once you install 2k and use it extensively, you'll never want to boot back into 9x.

(This was kind of a useless post, oh well.)
