Windows 2000 POP3 Email Server

I apologize if this post is a bit off topic. I felt that it would best be addressed in this forum.

I'm looking for a reliable, secure pop3 email server to run on a Windows 2000 AS box. It will not have to manage many accounts. Are there any open source options? If not, what are some relatively inexpensive alternatives? I'm pretty sure W2KAS does not have a built-in email server, but definitely correct me if I'm wrong.

ArGoSoft Mail Server. Can do both POP3, and Web Mail for remote access.

Try imail server. We use it at work and have had no problems. Really easy to use. Website

Express is free (up to 10 users) and others priced pretty well .IMO

You should be able to set up iis 5.0 to do basic pop mail services. You need to add the smtp connector to iis. I've heard of this working great for small office or webhosting setups. Is it possible that you could use a windows 2003 server. I like that implementation of pop mail better you can add a pop3 service in win 2003 and simple add the domain you want and create mail boxes. I've believe this is a good setup for small businesses who don't need an exchange server.

watts, just to correct your post IIS 5.0 does not have a POP3 connector at all. It only has SMTP so you can use it as a send only relay. You would have to use a 3rd party POP3 server. Win2003 has a POP server built-in (too much competition from free 'Nix I guess).

After further inspection you are correct. I guess thats why most people use win 2003 for basic email.

At the business I work at, we just implimented Desknow Mail and Collaboration Server. We used to use Imail, but it didn't entirely fit our needs. We also wanted something that was free (Imail Express was free for up to 10 users). So, a quick Google search later, and I came across Desknow. It has been everything we needed and then some. It can host unlimited users and unlimited domains for absolutely free. If you upgrade to the Pro version, you do get some extra features, such as the ability to tie in with standard antivirus programs. Compared to the prices for yearly subscriptions with other mail servers, this is a huge benefit. Also in the free version is webmail. Another thing that I loved about it is that it'll do automatic daily backups for you. Check their website on the features, and see if it works for you. If the Pro features are something you like, the prices seem very reasonable to me, as compared to some other mail servers.
