windows 2000 or win98 on celeron 466???

I was just wondering if I installed windows 2000 pro on a celeron 466 with 256mb of ram----if it would run at a good speed... Just wondering if I should install win 98 on that pc that Im building for my parents----I know they will prefer win2000 but Im just checking with you guys first to see if its a wise thing to do...

Win98 will probably be faster but how much faster????
Should I stick with win 98 for them???

my vote is for windows 2000.

one major reason is that it is more stable than win98. in term of speed, i am not sure which is faster. you do have 256mb ram, so it will run win2k with no problem.
 
The system seems perfectly suitable for Windows 2000, so that would be my definite recommendation. Also Win2000 would likely be a better fit for their uses.

Not noticeably faster except for boot-up time, which still isn't that much longer. And since they probably won't be gaming, they won't run into any problems there either. I'm single-booting into Win2K Pro, SP2 with no problems on my C466 w/192MB RAM. I recommend it for you too. 🙂
 
Win2K and the C466 with 192 MB should make a great combo for your parents.

A bit slower on boot than Win98, yet better stability. I ran Win2K with a C533.
 
I installed w2k on my mothers c466 and with 224mb of ram, it runs preety good. I would go for it over 98 any day.

Yes, with that amount of ram Win2000 is good unless they have some old funky DOS program or game they like.

Im quite happy about that because I like it a lot better... Everything I have works better under win2k pro except games---dont ask me why---it just does--- (printers, dvd decoders, stability)

go 2k for sure.. it will be faster.. and if you don't have a NIC, or Network card.. the boot time will be about the same.. good luck!
 
or dual boot win2k and win98. you could set the default countdown that the dual boot loader had before loading win2k to something low, like 2 seconds. that way you could have both and your parents wouldn't know the difference, the boot time would be only 2 seconds slower, right?

My brother has a Celeron 466 with 128 meg of RAM and a Voodoo3 3000 and runs Win2000.

He is a harcore Counter-Strike player and is in the top 10 in my country. He has never maoned about the speed or anything at all.
