Windows 2000 booting problems

Having some problems booting up on my Windows 2000 operating system. I think it has to do with turning computer on and then off abruptly, just once though. When windows boots I get passed the white bar across the screen but when I get to the windows Logo and blue bar in the middle of the screen it is stationary about 3/4 of the way and the wave of dark blue and light blue is halted. The wave usually flows from left to right.
The first time this happened an error check came up in dos and checked the disk everything was OK. Windows started normally, but after a re-boot I got what I described. I am able to get into widows if I press F8 when the white bar shows and boot with last know configuration.

What can I do to correct this problem?

If you can get into win using last know config, then it is fairly safe to assume that there isn't a chronic hardware problem.

Did you change ANYTHING the before the problems started - any configuration, driver, startup, firewalls, antivirus, hardware etc etc?????
Does safe mode work ok?

I don't believe anything was installed prior to this problem. Safe mode does not boot, I get the same symptoms as if booting normally. Something got disturbed, is there a repair or scan that I can run to correct this?

If you can get into last known config,
go to
START
RUN
type the following
SFC \scannow or was it sfc /scannow
See if that does it.
If not, I would be tempted to just do a repair reinstall over your installation. Make sure you decrypt/decompress any files you want to keep, just in case things go wrong.

Correction: on 2nd boot it goes back to what it was doing before. I ran the sfc \scannow and it has not fixed the problem. Also when I boot I get a message: invalid boot .INI file, booting from C:\winnt\. I can not access the system startup pull down window, when I go into system and click on the startup and recovery I get a system control panel applet: The C:\boot.ini file can not be opened. Operating System and Timeout settings can not be changed.

This message has been appearing in booting ever since I loaded windows 2000 which has been for a few months. The system has not had any trouble booting until now. The system got disturbed by pressing the power button on then off abruptly. Windows will boot from when pressing F8 Enable boot logging, Enable VGA mode, last known config and debugging mode but will not boot from booting normally.

Is there a way I can correct the booting message or should I reload windows?
What kind of reload will solve this? Format or not format?

Thanks

Could try copying someone else's boot.ini.
Configuring it to what you want.

Copy it to your computer - are you using NTFS or FAT?
