Think activations. You can install to your heart's content. You can only activate this one if you are doing an upgrade from within 7 or 8 that is within the period that has been defined. After that point, it is very likely an ID will be required to continue using/upgrading the OS, and once the OS is installed, it will need to be tied to a device.

If that's the case then, if the ISO even has the ability to do a clean install, it would be useless since it would be impossible to activate?

1) I can't find that exact quote in the article. Or anywhere for that matter.

2) I'm not sure where this keeps coming from. App stores make next to no profit. The 30% overhead is just a bit more than it costs to actually handle the transactions (CC costs), provide the storefront, etc. No one, not Google and not Apple, makes their money off of an app store. Google's play is advertising, Apple's play is hardware, and MS's play is platforms.

i read it from the "other thread about the same exact thing"

So, if you pirate win (whatever) and end up with a free copy of win 10, it WON'T be a genuine license.

This is getting highly confusing, I guess they heard the mass of people and OEMs screaming at them that nobody will ever again buy a copy of windows if they just give it away if they wait long enough?

The consumer free upgrade offer for Windows 10 applies to qualified new and existing devices running Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows Phone 8.1. Some editions are excluded from the consumer free upgrade—including Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise, and Windows RT/RT 8.1. Active Software Assurance customers in volume licensing have the benefit to upgrade to other Windows 10 enterprise offerings.

We have always been committed to ensuring that customers have the best Windows experience possible. With Windows 10, although non-Genuine PCs may be able to upgrade to Windows 10, the upgrade will not change the genuine state of the license. Non-Genuine Windows is not published by Microsoft. It is not properly licensed, or supported by Microsoft or a trusted partner. If a device was considered non-genuine or mislicensed prior to the upgrade, that device will continue to be considered non-genuine or mislicensed after the upgrade. According to industry experts, use of pirated software, including Non-Genuine Windows, results in a higher risk of malware, fraud (identity theft, credit card theft, etc), public exposure of your personal information, and a higher risk for poor performance or feature malfunctions.

Basically it seems like they can't be bothered trying to fight the crackers anymore but are still using the scare tactics that make some people buy windows for non-moral reasons

Realistically speaking they can't withhold anything substantial from non-genuine users, otherwise they won't upgrade.

Honestly just set up booths in as many countries as possible and hand out free full version retail 64-bit/32-bit Win 10 licences from Day 1 for 365 days. Also offer an .iso during that period. Done. You want it come get it. Stop with the restrictions and back tracking. THAT will get people moving.

Basically just confirms my point - they're letting pirates install the software without having to even crack it first but its legal status will still be "illegal"
Indeed. If non-genuine users get all the same updates without any kind of harassment, then they're getting the same OS. It's not as if anyone actually goes to MS for support.

The last I heard, Windows 10 was going to be subscription-based, ie pay monthly, or pay quarterly, etc. Has this changed recently? If so, giving away the OS means nothing, since you'd be forced to occasionally pay, to keep it activated/current/whatever they choose to call it.

You think that MS doesn't know if you are entitle to a free upgrade from win 7 or 8? to Win 10 RTM?,

everybody can aply to test win10 preview as long you sign in to MS, but in the end when the final Win 10 RTM comes MS will screen whoever has a legit win 7 or 8 and only will allow genuine owners of win 7,8 to get free Win 10 RTM.

It isn't and never was going to be subscription based. Those were poorly sourced rumors.

Frank, you seem to have missed the latest news. Non-genuine (pirate) copies of Win7 and Win8 will get free upgrades to Win10 as well. So that Microsoft can get everyone on the same OS.

It could be a good move to cut down piracy. Offer all those pirated win7/8 systems a free update, and then make it so Win 10 cannot be pirated. Then all those users will be stuck when they want Win 11. The only problem is that win 10 will be cracked and the keys sent to the four corners of the world just as easily as with all previous versions.

Win 8.1 still hasn't exactly been "cracked". Its KMS activation not a loader. Last I checked anyway. And I doubt there will be a Win 11, more likely Win 365.

Microsoft already has a subscription OS they are releasing, and it is being released as such.

...But the company has now confirmed that the suite costs between $7 and $12 per user per month and includes a Windows Enterprise Edition license for any x86 desktop/laptop or Windows tablet (as long as the screen is smaller than 10.1 inches). It also includes licenses to access Windows Enterprise via VDI or through the Windows To Go feature that lets users access a corporate pre-approved image of the OS from a USB drive...
