Does anyone know why the newest version of Windows 10 (version 2004) has to waste over 10 GB of free space I needed for the update????

That's too much space used up on my 1 TB boot SSD.
(I had 780 GB free before the update, now it's plunged down to 769 GB free.)

You can use the Win10 Disk Cleanup app (it still works, but is in the process of being deprecated) to clean up your system files (such as Windows Update files, prior Windows installation files, etc -- just make sure you aren't removing something you will need in the future. For instance, removing Windows Update files will prevent you from uninstalling the update in the future).

You can also set up the Storage Sense application to automatically clear your trash, temporary files, and downloaded files.

IIRC newer versions of Windows 10 hog a bunch of space and hold it in reserve for expected new gigantic updates.
