Windows 10 Updates: They want to slip a useless once-used HW driver update

Hello, so now I'm in this situation where Windows is waiting to download/install regular Windows updates, but the problem is, my sister used my PC to download a few music tracks into her Samsung smartphone, once. She will never be using my PC ever again. Yet, Windows Update insists that I download

"SAMSUNG Electronics Co., Ltd. - Other hardware - SAMSUNG Mobile USB Composite Device"

together with the regular Windows updates. I don't even have a smartphone yet I can't download the regular updates without downloading this useless software...
Is there any way not to download drivers for every single piece of external hardware that I've only used once..?

There is one setting in the telemetry section that seems to want to reset for some reason. Setting it again and restarting seems to make it take hold.

Didn't work for me.
Could it be because I messed with group policies and they now override any configurations I make?

That's the main reason I went back to Windows 7, I will not allow anyone to control what drivers I install / use

The Microsoft Hide/Show updates tool they released recently is useless, works sometimes but sometimes not

Apps to control Win 10's "Wide Sharing over the Net" are really needed.

That said, One have to be very careful. Some Apps writers are rushing to release their work and are not careful about the General affect of their changes.

These Apps are based on changing Services and User Policies, Even if it works OK on the programer computer it does not mean that it will Not "Mess Up" computers that are configured differently.

Always make an Image on an external Drive before One trys any of these Apps.

Now Windows 10 force-fed me AMD-ATI drivers...
Please help! Aren't there more ways to deal with this than that application?

Similar issue here - Windows 10 insists on installing some generic chipset driver for my USB WiFi stick, which doesn't work with 5 GHz AP's. The old driver from the manufacturer works fine, but every week or so, Windows 10 overwrites it with the more recent, generic driver and kicks me out to the much slower 2.4 GHz AP at home.

Force automatic updates are a great idea for security/critical updates, but the rest should be optional IMO.

Being obsessive about managing every single detail on my computer, this feels like rape :D Even worse, there aren't even any details on ATI website on what driver I was force-downloaded. I had the latest driver and no newer driver had been released.

If I weren't a gamer, I'd be sitting on Linux, laughing at Microsoft's idiocy now, even though I was always a Windows fan. However now I feel cornered.

I turned on onboard audio in my BIOS since my USB sound dongle doesn't have an updated driver and Windows installed the Realtek driver automatically even though I have "never install driver software from Windows update" set.

Does your computer work fine? Then instead of Win10ShutUp, how about UUuU shut up .

Disclaimer: not a huge fan of it either but I need to play my gtaV with keyb and mouse.

I just upgraded to Win10 Wednesday night, I told it to not download drivers automatically, and it hasn't attempted to yet for anything.

First of all, Windows ships with various drivers for the multitude of hardware devices that you can use. I am not sure when native support in the OS became a bad thing? More importantly, why is this a surprise, when even WinXP would do the same thing?

"Never install driver software from Windows Update" means exactly that. The OS will use whatever driver it already has, and not look online for updated drivers. You can always go to the device manager, and then uninstall the driver, checking the option "Delete the driver" to have it removed from local Windows driver cache as well.

Device manager > view > show hidden devices, remove the Samsung device.

What a big pile of mess Win10 is... make a complete backup of your OS partition and monitor for strange behaviours whenever you install a new app. It stupid since we never had to work so hard with the previous versions.

That's why you shouldn't be running any third party application to tweak windows features, when you can easily stay within the OS and do the same. First of all installing the driver shouldn't affect your system in any way, and regardless of that you should still be able to uninstall it anyway.

Letting the driver install would be far less troublesome than the time you will waste in looking for third party tools which may have other unintended consequences too.

Turn all info knobs to off, and set privacy data to "Basic" and after that the only stupidity is in being afraid and working hard for no reason. This much basic tracking has been there since WinXP. That's how MS could get BSOD crash data before.

This would probably do it. Good idea.

You realize he is referring to using a program that modifies functions of Windows, which if you're going to do something that is essentially "hacking" parts of the OS then it is a darn good idea to have a backup before you do that.

He's not referring to just general day to day program installation.

Ah ok.

Automatic upgrades that do the upgrading while you are using the computer are bad. Specially when it comes to Drivers.
While playing a game, Windows 10 decided to install the newest AMD Catalyst Drivers and installed them without asking (Through I have on defered upgrades). The result? The GPU Driver seems to reinitialize the GPU or something, since the Monitor blackscreened twice. Finally I had control again of W10, but the game that I was playing now was a black screen. Had to close it, open it again, and lose my current session.

If you turn off "Driver updates through Windows Update", then Win10 can't update your existing driver, unless it has in its local cache a newer driver. To resolve these issues, uninstall the unwanted driver from device manager, and select "delete the driver" option too. After that it can't magically come back as long as the device installation settings are set to not use Windows Update for drivers.

By the way, this is how earlier Windows versions behave as well, if you turn off acquiring drivers through Windows update.

Mine has been set to not install drivers since I set it up on August 1st. Yesterday it installed a new AMD Radeon driver, which broke Catalyst Control Center, it would no longer run, just error out. Had to download the whole package from AMD to fix it.

Turning off driver updates appears to do nothing at all.

It prevents the drivers from being downloaded at the time you plug them in, but not when Windows Update does its scan, it seems.
