The first thing I noticed was a churning HDD. Figuring an automatic update I looked at Update and saw a problem. The info said downloading updates but the % indicator was empty. I went to details and saw a long list of updates waiting to download. The top one was Defender definitions update that said underneath " downloading". I waited several minutes but nothing changed. So I tried to manually update Defender but that progress bar stalls half way, looking for updates. I went to services in Task Manager to stop the updating service .
Rebooted. The update window then said " Couldn't complete download as you turned off the computer" and offered a button to "try again". I did but now the searching for updates never ends and the HDD churns away.
I use this machine every day and Defender definitions are always up ,to date as is this OS (1511).
Can anyone assist ? I have tried a MS app to correct updater problems but it found no problems.

This morning the HDD action continued--Updates shows a bunch of updates to install, constant disk access, and nothing in the % completion bar. But stuff had moved around and the list of updates
had shortened. Was something actually happening ? Well yes indeed.

It all stopped a few hrs later and Updates said --"all updates are installed,.......". ? OK.
So, there was no real problem, only windows taking ~ 4.5 hours over 2 days to search and install about 10 updates, with no feedback indication that the process was actually progressing.
my bad

To show you how bad it was, when I went to disk cleanup, the app said there was 3.4TB of files in the update folder . I hit delete and one hour later the disk cleanup completed. 3TB ? How is that possible on a 256GB disk ?

Before I got to post 5, I was thinking "maybe there is something wrong with the drive." After reading about the sizing issues, I am even more suspicious. What drive do you have? Does CrystalDiskMark give you a decent score for a drive of that type?

The performance of the drive appears normal compared to published reviews of the drive-a Samsung 950 Pro.Lower seq reads but average on writes.

In looking around, I found someone else with a similar report by disk cleanup in Windows 10. His showed the update folder with 3.99 TB of data --lol.

"After reading this tip I did the clean up altho it was only 29MB and went for a tea while it did its thing. Coming back the clean up pane/field was back with an item to be cleaned of 3.99TB!! My C drive is 160GB. I do have an external drive, not connected , of 3 TB so what happened?
Forgot to say what that monster was -it was Windows Update cleanup."

I wonder if compression is a factor ?

I made the mistake of checking off "Windows Update Cleanup", after upgrading to 1607 and wanting to delete the old copy of the prior OS. It was taking quite a long time, even on an SSD system, it had been going for like 10 minutes, so I clicked "cancel", and rebooted.
