Hello-

I am having computer problems that will likely require me to replace my motherboard with the same make and model, but a physically different board. I was using one of those M2 Samsung drives as a boot drive, and had a second internal mechanical hard drive for storage. On the second mechanical hard drive is my back-up system image created with the Windows backup and restore function. When I build this system, it was a clean Windows 10 install and I have the disc.

So if I unplug all my stuff, put the new MB in, then plug everything back in, including my M2 Samsung boot drive, I *assume* that when I turn my computer on, it WILL NOT boot from my M2 Samsung boot drive with my old system info, correct?

If it won't simply reboot from my old M2 boot drive and give me my old system back, what's the best/easiest way to get my old backed up system back?

Thanks.

It should boot up fine. And if you have a retail version of Win 10 it will activate fine. If it is not a retail version, say a digital upgrade from Win 7 or 8 then you may need to reactivate it. A phone call to MS might be needed, won't know for sure until you try it.

Oh good. That's good to know that I can just buy a new motherboard, plug the old boot drive in and it will boot up normally. I thought the boot drive would be tied to the specific MB and I'd have to reinstall a clean Windows 10 then restore from a system image. My system image was about a week old and I didn't want to lose a week's worth of stuff!

And I do have a retail version of Windows 10.

Thanks!

There is also in the latest build an Activation Troubleshooter which you could try first before to the call if you want
