Win 10 launched less than a month ago..... lol. slow down there tex. Just because everyone doesn't jump on 10 immediately doesn't mean they eventually won't be running it. Most gamers will be pretty much be forced into it eventually if they want dx12 features. I imagine by 2020 (win 7 EOL) most that swore they would never use it will be using it.

The argument isn't how people will eventually go to 10. If Microsoft stays on it's plan, everybody will be on 10 at some point (the last OS). The current argument is speed, which gauges how well their salesmanship on the new OS is working out. At least we can say it's doing better than 8.

Problem is times change from year to year even from month to month, there are more tablets, smart phones out there now then last year and year before, so comparing to previous Operating Systems is not without errors.

Fact is Microsoft Operating Systems are up against tougher competition now, so comparing sales to previous Microsoft Operating Systems is not really valid.

How many sales have Microsoft lost due to competition from Android, Linux, Apple etc, now that would be a better gauge, however hard to do in the real world, yes would be great if they did that for the last ten years up to the present day, but that won't happen.
Remember those users out there that ditch Microsoft based PCs for Android/Apple tablets or smart phones, yes I know a few that have done so, change of the times .

So point being does it really matter?..Obviously not since you either get with Win10 or end up on older Microsoft Operating Systems that will be phased out well before EOL of 10.

It does seem a bit low, when you think that everyone running 7 and 8 got a very obvious urge to upgrade. I also noticed, as was mentioned in another thread, that the Windows 10 upgrade offer was re-sent if you hid the update and removed the update files. The files returned as well.

I can understand Microsoft wanting to get most of their supported users on the same platform, but thir attempts to do so seem a tad on the desperate side, especially when you compare numbers, as the OP has.

You do realize that the installs were being held back early on, yes? Terry Myerson was pretty clear that things would happen in "waves". Even with the wave system, the downloads were in excess of 10TB/s over Akamai. That's pretty impressive (I believe that it was said that the amount of traffic generated was more than any iOS launch prior.)

What I don't get is...in less than a month Windows 10 has more installs than Windows 7 had "sales" in twice the amount of time. 90,000 different brands of machines...to me, that sounds like an OS that is solidly on the way to being the dominant Windows OS. Nearly every review is a rave review...hell, even the Twitter posts were made in a "look how successful this is!" manner - so why is everyone going on about how poorly Windows 10 is doing?

Not only is it free, it is being almost force-fed to users of 7 and 8.x. The numbers are hardly surprising given the way it is being shoved into computers.

I've upgraded a couple machines, and while I'll give you that the daily pop-up is annoying, it is a far cry from being "shoved" onto people's machines. It isn't auto installed.

I think a lot of the negativity is wishful thinking. There are a lot of people who have an unnatural hatred of MS. Add on the privacy fears (which are overblown in IMO, but whatever) and you can have a perception of things going badly. Reality is that this has been very successful so far. Even more amazing is that upgrading actually works for the most part, something that is just short of a miracle for Windows.

Weird. All I've heard everywhere were complaints on how it messes up people's computers, how they didn't want it, and how they can't roll back. These are possibly the first two posts I've ever heard claiming otherwise, or maybe I'm misremembering the first few weeks. It being a free upgrade does make a world of difference though. I doubt many people would actually blow money on Windows 10 when they already have Windows 7.

Well, I think a bunch of that is that you're on a tech forum, which isn't at all a good sample set. You have tech die hards with strong opinions and people who have hit problems posting. Same reason you need to take product reviews by owners with a grain of salt - people are more motivated to write a bad review than a positive one. Writing the review is a form of catharsis. I'll reiterate: I've done a bunch of upgrades, and none have hit a problem. They all ended with me in Windows 10 on a system running just fine. It's all about sample size ;)

I'm sure MS knows that it being a free upgrade will help things along...and if it gets people on a new OS that costs less to maintain and gives them a new way of getting revenue (apps) then they see it as actually being an investment.

I think so.

Sure, there were some issues, but to say "All I've heard everywhere were complaints" is quite the stretch.
