No way, that is too idiotic.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ms724832(v=vs.85).aspx

XP is 5.1
7 is 6.1
8.1 is 6.3

and used within source, it is:
Windows 8.1 NTDDI_WINBLUE (0x06030000) or
Windows 8.1 _WIN32_WINNT_WINBLUE (0x0603)

Windows 7 NTDDI_WIN7 (0x06010000) or
Windows 7 _WIN32_WINNT_WIN7 (0x0601)

Windows XP NTDDI_WINXP (0x05010000) or
Windows Server 2003, Windows XP _WIN32_WINNT_WINXP (0x0501)

So, in other words, that looks totally bogus that someone would check a version string that way.

Yeah but dont those version numbers follow on from NT? NT 4.0 -> XP 5.0 -> Vista 6.0

Windows 95/98 don't fit in with that, I got no idea what their version numbers were :\

just checked the preview... well, as a 8.0/8.1 user I felt at home, having a button for "alt+tab" is not to bad, and not having to cover the entire screen to search when I press winkey is fine... but it definitely feels like the same OS, which is good I guess, I never cared about metro apps, so I can't really say much, but having them as regular desktop program window is better,

the new start menu seems like a real improvement over the start screen,

The flat look is a step backwards from Aero aesthetically, and I really don't understand the big "App" push. Apps everywhere...for everything. Do you know people? HAVE AN APP!!! Do you news? HAVE AN APP!!! Want to buy something? WE EVEN HAVE AN APP THAT ALLOWS YOU TO BUY APPS!!! Soooo meta.
My guess is the micro soft heads had a meeting that went something like this: "iOS/Android is stealing OUR money with tablet/smartphones, so lets stop sitting on our *** and--- copy them and make Windows Store!"

Chrome is worse. An app called YouTube and Facebook that just go to www.youtube.com and www.facebook.com? Lol. Maybe their tracking databases told them "new gen" users are too stupid to know what a bookmark is.

I love the apps. I use facebook instagram engadget espn and flipboard. Works perfectly with the live tiles.

I have those two apps on my smartphone (Android). Saves time going to a browser, if you don't use it for anything else.

But by using an app, you are giving them permission to look at all your contacts, recently dialed numbers, text messages, browser history, bookmarks, etc.

That's why they want to force everyone to use an "app". So that they can spy on users.

If true then the best thing to do is install as less as possible. And the best way is....forget about computers and telephones. I lived like that for 8 years, 2002-2010.

Others may not share this view.
Personally I wouldn't care less if they want to check everything about me. I am a very low profile person, but I also do not care if anyone finds out anything about me. It might even be simpler if "they" just ask me. I became like that after I got arrested for something back in 1998.
