Windows 10 install problems

I have been updating my personal+business computers the last few days. Have tried 5 upgrades. 3 of them were 8.1 -> 10 and they all worked flawlessly. The other 2 machines are 7 and neither will upgrade properly.

One of them has the update ready to go and anytime you tell it to start the progress bar will spin for about 10 minutes and then the window will close and nothing will happen. The last machine did manage to install 10 but nothing worked. It could not connect to a wireless network. I reinstalled the drivers for my access point and still could not get it to work. Over the course of 8-9 reboots I could only even get it to list available networks once and it got stuck trying to connect. Also, if you unplugged a usb device and plugged it back in it would not recognize it until a reboot. Ended up rolling that computer back to 7 and everything worked again.

Very small sample size but wondering if anyone else had issues going from 7 to 10.

I was surprised how well my Lenovo laptop went from 7 to 10. 7 had been out for barely a year when I bought it.

A couple thoughts:
On your first issue with the progress bar, I had better luck going to Windows update and starting it from there. Also, make sure you don't have any hidden updates, which could cause this not to work.

On your second issue, see if there is a Windows 10 update on the manufacturer's site for your wireless card. The driver that came with it may not work with Windows 10. If you still can't get it to work, plug it directly into the router and see if Windows Update has a driver for the card.

move systems to 10 upgrade and then reinstall 10, regardless of what works and what doesn't.

if it fails. reinstall original system OS, and before updating anything at all, force the upgrade to 10.

last but not least, is to strip each hardware component from the rig and install each component, one at a time upon every restart test.
