No, I distinctly remember them saying they wanted a for sure monthly fee with Windows 365. Apps bought occasionally with a one time cut won't do. :hmm:

Good point, skip the share of 1.2 billion Candy Crush has amassed. Being a free game that is all in app purchases.

It works for Apple, why shouldn't it work for MS?

They're just trying to build a similar hardware/software eco system as Apple has.

Yes, 5% of the computers in the world run an Apple OS, so obviously Microsoft needs to copy that!

What a silly company.

Really? "Windows 365" is something that MS trademarked (or applied for a trademark on) back in January 2015; there's been no information on this from MS.

Exact Bro; you want to know why! well i'll tell you why.
cause i have the most outstanding OPS in the world; UBUNTU14.04LTS and is all free, and it does everything Better than Win, for me;maybe for others it doesn't work same way!
you have to admit for a free OPS Linux doing all it does for people without paying any thing has to be the BEST, besides Linux works in any Hardware old, new,it just helps poor people that can't afford to buy a new PC. do i make any sense?

You'd make more sense if you used that spiffy computer of yours, that has a nice keyboard and hit the spiffy space bar after punctuation marks...

That said...no, it doesn't make much sense. You like Ubuntu? Fine. Go use that. You think it's better than Windows...that's also fine. You're not likely to use Win10 anyway it seems.

I don't think everybody in the planet knows about this OPS stuff, only a few are savoy enough to do this, maybe 10% knows how to do it,the other 90% will just buy it.

Huh? What "OPS" stuff? If you mean "OS", then I imagine the experience for Win7-Win8.1 users will be similar to what it was for Win8 users: you got a dialog telling you that Windows 8.1 was available, and you should go to the Windows store to install it.

Lets look at growthrates...

MS got their market share in a different time.

Yes, but they are fundamentally different types of companies. Apple is primarily a hardware company, MS is primarily a software company. I'm not sure either one could try to copy the other and have any success.

It will be interesting to see if Microsoft grows anything with the new strategy. The tablet market is going to be really hard to grow in unless Android really starts floundering, and while Apple is "out there" more than in the past, they still a tiny dot in the markets that have always been dominated by Windows.

Maybe but when I look at my pupils (7-10th graders) I would say apple has +50% market share...

that's not too bad! what will bad if MS tells you, you got to go to store and buy it,
If that is the case! i'll respond screw you MS,you won't see the color of my money; and go back to where i use a free OPS.whatever it maybe,im using my Hardware to test a MS unstable OPS,so i should be rewarded for that,if not i will never ever submit myself to another MS preview, and hope everybody will follow.

Schools have always been Apple. But seriouly, I have a theory. People my age group and our kids are Android. People a decade above and their kids are Apple.

That is what I see around where I live anyway.

Apple has never been Schools in Denmark. Apple has only had their market in DTP here, but with the iPhone/iPad/i* they've really increased their market/brand over here.

With Windows Vista, 7 and 8, you weren't given Windows for free for using the preview/beta/RC builds. They're not meant for you to run full time. They're mainly meant for companies to grab them and make sure their software will run on them, create new drivers and so forth. Just FYI.

Upgrades are free (they weren't in the past however). The initial hardware purchase includes a copy of the operating system. It is a different business model than Microsoft's for sure.
It's a different business model than Apple, but Apple's business model had a significant impact on Microsoft's business none the less. When people can get their OS upgrades for free from other vendors, it starts bringing negative attention to the fact that you charge for your upgrades. More conflicting still, Microsoft wants to leverage the same OS for PCs and tablets; Apple gives away their tablet OS updates for free, how is Microsoft supposed to justify charging PCs for updates and at the same time give the OS away for free to tablets?

Apple is still a minority player (and damn near non-existent in the Enterprise space), but they have enough clout that they've made the idea of paying for OS upgrades look foolish. Any kind of choice for Microsoft is merely an illusion, anything other than giving away the OS upgrades for free would have caused quite a bit of harm.

Meanwhile you also have to take into consideration the fact that OS upgrade sales haven't been a significant portion of Microsoft's income in quite some time. New PC sales, Enterprise sales, and Office sales have become such a cash cow for Microsoft that selling OS upgrades every 3-5 years was a one-quarter blip on Microsoft's financial sheets. Sure they made some easy money, but it was never all that great. So the loss to Microsoft for giving away updates is not all that great either.

It's also important to keep in mind Microsoft's grand plan, which is to leverage Windows across phones, tablets, PCs, and even the XB1 in order to capture a greater share of the latter 3 markets. That plan only works if the largest Windows user base (PCs) is capable of running universal applications, and PC users are not going to be in a rush to upgrade if they have to pay for it. Which is why Microsoft is willing to eat the loss on upgrade sales now in order to get the PC users up to Win10, and in the long run that greatly increases their chances of taking a larger piece of the mobile pie.

And no, app stores are not major profit sources. Neither Apple nor Google make much of a profit off of those; 30% sounds like a lot, but you just end up spending it all on infrastructure, support, and payment processing because you're making a bunch of tiny sales. Microsoft won't make money off of an app store any they know it. The play is on Windows licenses and services for those users (with an added bonus of driving more Enterprise spending).

Subscription model?
I hope so, as long as the price is right.

TechNet was a subscription service and many cried when it was changed.

Hi guys; i just got this info about the free Win 10, hope the people that are septic about MS to give free upgrade; please reed this.

Question: Can people update their Windows 10 Technical Preview to full release when it is out?

Response from MS: Yes, you will be able to upgrade from the Windows 10 Technical Preview to the final release.

Question: Is it Free?

MS Answer: Whether or not the upgrade is free probably depends on having windows 7 or 8 still installed so be sure not to wipe out windows 7 or 8 when testing the preview. Install it on a separate partition or hard drive or on a second computer. Or have a system image of windows 7 or 8 that can be reinstalled. That's important since Windows 8 does not come with reinstallation media.

I also took out my main HDD with win 7 and had an extra HDD, where i installed an ISo of with 7 then i upgraded from there to win 10,since i couldn't do a clean install of win 10 preview, still yet to know why i couldn't make a clean install!

Actually, i could not get Windows 10 nor EASUS Partition Manager to resize from 74GB to 120GB once i moved the OS to a SSD. I had to boot from the Win 10 preview ISO and delete all partitions and do a clean install on my SSD. It worked and everything is smooth as can be now.

I used to use the 74GB raptors (in RAID 0) - going to an SSD was the best choice I made, really. Less noise...

Even on a HDD the Win 10 boot is fast. I am not sure if that is true with Win8 because i never used it but 10 is a quick boot.

I have the notification for Win 10 to auto download on my PC when it is ready but now I am nervous we will not get a backup to reinstall after a year. I hope once you have Win 10 you can reinstall it for free.

Once you upgrade to 10, you should get a Windows 10 key. As I mentioned in another this, this may just operate like an upgrade, and not work for a clean install.

It would require more work but you are saying if i want a new clean install i will have to reinstall 7 and then upgrade to 10? I suppose i could do that since i do not reformat often.
