I have tried everything I can think of to get my server back and nothing works. It was running windows 8.1 pro x64 and I did the free upgrade to 10 pro x64. Now when I boot it looks fine, till I log in. After logging in, I am greeted with a black screen. I can't bring up task manager, I can't bring up any real window. I can get into the command prompt and can change startup settings, but nothing, not even safe mode seems to have an effect.

Any ideas? I can't reinstall windows, so that is out. I backed up the files, but forgot to back up the database.

Thanks!

System specs.

Core 2 Quad q9550
8gb ddr2 ram
Radeon hd 5770 (also have tried other ati and nvidia cards, but the 5770 was what was in the system from the start.
128gb ssd

----edit-----

Ok, I can launch things like regedit, but things like notepad and many other programs will just crash, taking out the command window.

----edit again----

Turns out the "upgrade" did not fully upgrade the system, leaving many system files missing. I had to do a repair install, meaning I had a lot of work to do in restoring the system to working condition. Thanks microsoft.....

IDK if they did away with msconfig, but try running it and go to its boot tab and check Safe boot, hit OK and run the command shutdown -r -f -t 0. See if anything works within safe mode.

nice upgrade, wasn't it

It's part of the reason I am done with windows. I'll never build another windows box again. I use Linux Mint as my primary OS on nearly every other rig. Sure Linux has it's problems, but I can always get a shell and fix the issue. I went windows on this box mainly to run a dayz server (arma 2 based). It's the last game I play that is windows only.

I'll set the box back up later today and try the suggestions.

Puffnstuff- No, but I did boot off a usb key with win10 and it could not find any problems to fix.

What driver did you use? AMD is having some issues with black screening and the newer catalyst drivers. I had it happen to my laptop a couple of times.

Can you get Task manager with CTRL ALT DELETE?

If so, have it run Explorer.exe and see if you get to the desktop.

I can't bring up task manager,
I have however tried running it from the command prompt and nothing shows.

Just the default drivers. I never was able to get a desktop with the upgrade. Honestly I would use my old pci s3 card, but it's vga only and my monitor is dvi. This box will never play games, only act as a file server and game server so any 3D card is overkill.

I've tried that. If you can't give helpful advice please don't reply. Saying google it is just being a troll.

Interesting point, even if you interpreted it wrong.

Perhaps that should be part of the question and answer protocol here regarding computer problems?

"Have you googled/searched the issue and tried the most common solutions?"

If the answer is yes, it helps weed out a lot of unnecessary back and forth in the thread.

THIS. I do like helping people here, but there is a lot to be said for a good Google search.

harshbarj, the re-install Puffnstuff mentioned is a good thing to try here. Tell it you are doing an upgrade (IIRC) and it won't delete any of your stuff.
