Windows 10, a simple question

I have only used this (really just starting), on my RCA Cambio tablet/PC (has removable keyboard).

I'm just setting things up.

So, I want to copy a folder from my network (it's mapped in the Win10 tablet), to the tablet. I want all the files in the folder, but I want to skip the folder's subfolders. I'm accustomed to using Windows. My other PCs are running Win7 or WinXP. What I'm accustomed to doing to accomplish this is simply selecting the top folder, select one of the files within that folder, press Control+A (which selects everything including the files in the top folder and all the subfolders). Then, holding down the control key I and left click each of the subfolders I want to de-select. Then I would press Control + C (to place everything still selected on the clipboard) and then paste where I want these things, in this case on the tablet.

However, when I press Control + A, I am not getting everything selected. In fact nothing happens. What's with this? I am getting a checkbox next to individual files which gets checked when I click the file. There seems to be no way to select multiple files. 🙁

The check-mark is the selection. I mean, yeah. So, the opposite of nothing happens. Something happens. Items that weren't checked get checked. It's not the norm for Windows, but connect the dots.

You can disable the check-box in the file and folder options. I'm not a fan of it, myself.

Odd.
Ctrl+A works fine here, it selects all, then I can do Ctrl+C/V to copy/paste.

Try resetting your folders.

Um, what's resetting the folders? 😕 Where/how do I go about doing that? AFAIK I have never changed any of the folder settings... However, it's possible, it's been around 3 months since I turned on the machine! 😱 I'm only now getting around to setting up the machine the way I like.

Yesterday I attached my USB mouse to the tablet, it makes life 10x easier. Before I had to tap the mousepad to get a left click. A right click, AFAIK can only be achieved (without an actual mouse) by tapping something and holding it for 2+ seconds on the screen itself. Ugh! :'( I should really have bought a bluetooth mouse for it instead of a USB mouse. I didn't think of it, I have never in my life used bluetooth!

I'm now on the tablet PC. I reset folders and probably more than I needed to. On first try, it still didn't work and I wondered if the keyboard was working, opened a text file and found that the keyboard does work. Tried again, and Control + A now does select everything in a folder. The funny checkboxes next to files disappeared, don't know what they are for.

Man, I think I may be using the USB keyboard I bought for this thing a lot. I haven't used it yet. This keyboard is going to take some getting used to but when I travel, I'm sure I'll be using it exclusively.

I think I know what is going on with the checkboxes. When you are in tablet mode there will be checkboxes, when you turn off tablet mode the checkboxes will disappear. It is supposed to automatically switch when you attach the keyboard. I am not familiar with that tablet, so it is possible that windows doesn't correctly recognize the keyboard attachment.

There are some setting for this in Settings > System > Tablet Mode

Ctrl-a should work regardless, not sure what is up with that. Perhaps the keyboard connection is loose, which is why it wasn't switching modes consistently.

There is an option to turn on/off the check boxes, missed the part where OP said tablet.

My win 10 tablet behaves just the same as my desktop and I don't run it in tablet mode plus I use classic shell to keep the menus like win 7.

And yes, I have gotten the feeling several times that the keyboard isn't seen as attached. I think it has to be an intermittent problem. Maybe cleaning contacts will resolve it.

Is that classic shell set up in folder options?
