I am still on a bought and legal windows 7-64. It will not be long before i get the gwx message that i can update to windows 10. It has happened on my work, but at home i have not seen it yet.

But i do not want to upgrade from windows 7 to windows 10 and then after activation do a clean install of windows 10. I want to directly do a clean install of windows 10. An upgrade would mean about a quarter to a half a terabytes of writes to my ssd. and then again a quarter to a half of teraybytes of writes for windows 10.

Has Microsoft already issued a solution for this ?
Or am i forced to buy a windows 10 license ?

EDIT:

----------------------------

Installed and running. :)
See post 11.

I will post some nice information if i find something useful.

You can skip the upgrade process by booting the ISO from Media Creation Tool and entering your 7 key; 1511 build of 10 will activate using this key. Clean installation is the way to go.

1) You can do a fresh install using your Windows 7 key to activate 10 as mentioned. I did this for someone's computer in February.

2) Where are you coming up with 1/2 a terabyte of writes?

3) The upgrade isn't going to kill your SSD or even wear it that much. My old 256GB Crucial M4 handled the upgrade and everything just fine.

This SSD thing is harder to kill than the plasma tv myths.
And yet I had a Samsung 840 evo up and die on me after 1 1/2 years and my Panasonic plasma has burn in :\.

I don't blame him for not wanting the extra "wear and tear" on the SSD. A clean install is the way to go. It was one of the few positive moves MS made with Windows 10.

It's not impossible for an SSD to die, but a Windows update won't kill it. If it died from that, it would have died soon regardless because it has to be defective.

I've used/installed probably a couple dozen Crucial SSDs by now, and I did have one fail and have to send it in for replacement under warranty about a year in. Thing is, I'm still not certain if it was the SSD to blame or the laptop, seeing as the laptop's original platter drive had failed, been replaced with another drive which had failed, and now the SSD... :hmm:

I am using the media creation tool, i downloaded it last week. But it mentions i can only do a clean install with a windows 10 key.
And can upgrade only using a valid windows 7 or 8.1 key.

Is this a glitch ?
Is it because i have a dutch (Netherlands) windows ?

I have created an usb boot device and for to be sure, i am also downloading the iso and will burn that on a dvd. That way i am fully covered if for whatever reason, the usb install does not go according to plan.
Everything is backed up to external hdd.

I am ready to go either way, if i have to upgrade or clean install. :)

It is in dutch, but that is what it says :

Clean install : windows 10 key only.
Upgrade from win7 or win 8.1. Old key needed to upgrade to win10.

This cannot be true...

First the media creation tool downloads W10, only to after completely downloading it, checking if it has the latest version of the OS ?
Why does it not check for that in the first place ?
Which dumb idiot came up with that idea ?

http://www.windowscentral.com/use-media-creation-tool-update-windows10

The app really wants to make sure it is up to date so it will check again for the latest OS on Microsoft's servers. You can grab a coffee while it does its work.

Handy perhaps, the windows 10 updates archive :

Well, i said flap it. I stopped the upgrade through the media creation tool after an hour of searching for updates.
I did a clean install.
Plugged in the USB stick, booted from the usb stick in uefi mode.
Nothing happened.
Booted from the usb stick.
Windows started installing.
And tried entering my W7 key.
Here was something weird, the keys of my keyboard were scrambled. But luckily there was a software keyboard on the screen that i could use with the mouse only to type in the product key.
After that it started installing. And i have to say, it was the fastest install i have seen so far.
During install, all logging and automatic sending of information and other privacy related issues can be turned off.
W10 asks for this before you can continue. It does not automatically continue.
But although it seemed to hang a few times during installation. I only had the flashing light of the ssd/hdd light to go on. Some more information what windows is doing would be nice.
It works. I now have a registered Windows 10.
The media creation tool text is misleading and not updated in the dutch version.

It is working flawlessly at the moment.
All hardware is installed without asking a question.
Only my dvd player did not show up, but that was because windows 10 only shows the dvd player when a disc is present.

Now i have a small learning curve to get used to windows 10.
And to change W10 to my wishes.
And to install about 15 essential programs.

But if this is a sign of things to be, i would recommend W10.
The horror stories i heard so far are no longer valid.

Wn 10 per-se is less than 18 GB.

I.e., you can easily run it on a 32GB SSD.

Not all that shines is gold.

I have to solve the missing PATH variable because my GCC no longer runs.
I made a new environment variable called PATH, but unfortunately GCC gives major errors about heaps and memory and other issues. I have to look into that.
If i cannot solve it, I can run it in a virtual machine. There is a solution. :)

The standard drivers are not always what they seemed to be. I missed a few audio options and had to install the realtek HD audio drivers i got with the MB but it all works now. :)

Windows 10 seems a bit like it is anxious and on the edge when responding.
And also seems a bit schizophrenic with all the different looks.
The explorer view is just not good. Lot of wasted space that i cannot use at the moment. But maybe i will find a registry trick on the internet.
I do have to say, the W7 progress bar looked great but the W10 progress bar looks like i went back in time to windows 95 or 3.11.
I find the fonts a bit odd when compared to W7. No anti aliasing.
Also, because of the W10 theme, some older programs look awful. That everything as white as possible i do not like and hope i can find a solution to it.

I will have to check the task scheduler if there are not tasks scheduled that are not necessary.

And i had a quick glance at the services, and a lot of remote desktop services were set to manual. I disabled them.
I will have to do a thorough check to see which services are unnecessary and which services are essential.

I have installed almost all my programs but i am not there yet. Have to verify that my logic analyzer still works.

Windows map size = 12.4GB.

Forgot to mention. Overall opinion about W10 : I am pretty content with it. :)

That is strange, i just got some updates from microsoft.

I have now version 1511.
build 10586.494.

I used to be able to turn of if i wanted ads or not, but now it is under control of my organization ? And i have no longer any control over it.

And some of the privacy settings i turned off were turned on again. Especially the ones related to microphone.
I guess i have to check the privacy settings after each update.

If you favor the windows 7 start menu you can install classic shell and restore that familiar feel to the menu system.

No need, i am already used to it.
I do think Microsoft should have created a theme user interface that is completely made for either touch or mouse and keyboard but not both at the same time.

Boot time from cold start is in between 10 to 15 seconds(ignoring bios splash screen and the time i have type my password). Impressive.

Well, i have some points of concern as well.

I noticed, that the whole update software in W10 has some Quality of Service system running when it comes to network traffic. When it is downloading, my normal internet is slowed down considerably. I have to look into that.
I also noticed that the whole windows update can cause glitches and stopping the sound for a moment.
This never happened under windows 7 while playing music.

I don't have those issues on any of my pc's when running WU in 10 so you might want to see if there are updated drivers for your hardware.

Yeah, i have to check for all drivers if it is working ok.
Maybe Realtek has newer audio drivers.
The default drivers that came with windows 10, do not enable all functionality i have.
So, i installed the old drivers that came with my mother board.

Could also be a bug in vlc player. I noticed that when playing an mp3 from an usb stick, that as soon as i wrote to that usb stick, vlc stopped playing and started stuttering. While with older versions of vlc it would always cache/buffer the entire mp3 before playing and i would never have such an issue. I have to check the settings from vlc or check if windows 10 has some issue.

I started improving windows by disabling services that i do not need and it seemed to work better. But i have not done any long term testing yet.

It is time to get learn powershell. Just like in the old days, when i had a script and a registry file that with one execution of the script, would restore all settings as i want them.

Went to the Gigabyte site and there where W10 drivers for the audio released last year. I downloaded and installed them , also updated the drivers for the network controller. It all seems to work fine. :)

Well, good news. GCC is up and running and i did not install anything for it.
I think the massive windows 10 update that i got fixed the issues that i had with the gcc compiler.

For those interested : From this website, you can download the latest W10 iso.
I could have saved my self the trouble of the massive update with getting the iso immediately instead of using the media creation tool.

My current setup with programs is ~26GB on my C ssd. But i still need to install visual studio express C++ and MPLABX. Will be a total of about ~29GB i assume.

I still have to remove my windows .old directory of ~15GB.

I also noticed, that W10 has different progress bars depending on the program. I just have seen the good ol' W7 green progress bar again in a program. :)

EDIT:

MY SSD (256GB) is still fine :)

If you download with the link, i get this ISO : Win10_1511_2_English_x64.iso.

Is that not the most recent released one ?
I do have to say, i do not know which build version.
