Windows 10 1607 Anniversary update not installing

I've tried several times to install the anniversary update and it's not working. I've searched for solutions and tried things I've read like running the trouble shooter. It said it fixed something. I've downloaded the Windows 10 upgrade 28084 executable file and ran it several times.. rebooted etc. Nothing is working. Is there a fix or any other info about how to install the update?

Are you running any third party utilities? The new windows upgrade tool managed to get around things that the media creation tool would balk at for me. Every one of my windows installs were able to use it to update to 1607 when WU and the media creation tool would fail.

No. Only thing installed are games. I've uninstalled some 'Windows Features' through the Programs and Features window. I took off Windows Media Player, and a few other things that gaming doesn't need. I only left on .Net Framework 3.5 & 4.6

What worked for me: USB connected image capture devices need to be right-click uninstalled (in Device Manager) then physically disconnected. A flat-bed scanner and a web camera are two examples.
Simply disconnecting the device was insufficient.
Why this was required, and why there was no clear error message of how to fix the error? Don't know.

Hmm, interesting. I have disabled all legacy USB 2.0 ports via device manager and High Definition Audio.

I did follow the link Jack provided and it failed once, doing it again and am about to find out there in a minute what's going to happen.

Yep the upgrade mechanism in 10 works very well and the upgrade assistant tool does a very good job of preserving the file system which I had issues with using the media creation tool to move from 1511 to 1607. Glad you got it sorted out. I've updated 7 pc's so far with the update tool without issue.
