Go to newegg. You can get the full version (OEM) for $145 with free shipping. This is a much better deal than an upgrade!

Could not find any Windows XP OS for less than $96 at Newegg and that was for Windows XP Home OEM. The OEM versions will only let you perform a new installation. Although that is the better way to go some people still prefer upgrading an existing installation. The upgrade versions I believe will let you do a clean installation but you must have a key code from a previous version if starting with a reformatted drive or if it finds a previous version I believe you can still do a clean installation.

if you do a fresh install after formatting your HD with an upgrade CD, you need the actual install CD of the previous version of Windows...

you should be able to boot with the upgrade CD (at least I could)...it will go through the normal setup routine (examine your system, install drivers, etc)...after you hit PF8 to accept the license agreement, it will prompt you to insert the install CD of the previous version (Windows 9X, Me, 2K)...once it validates the previous version, the installation will proceed as normal...

LOL
Ive never paid a cent for any MS OS. Well maybe 25 cents since blank media does cost money.

If you however wanna pay money, theres this seller on ebay that seems to have hundreds of copies of XP Pro Full and has a buy it now price of $100.

So, let's say I have a new hard drive or one that has Linux and I want to make a clean install of WinXP OEM all I have to do is buy the upgrade version and install it, then it will ask to insert a previous version of Windows? I do not have to have a previous version of Win OS installed on the drive itself?

The reason I ask is that I have Linux Redhat on a HDD and would like to get rid of that and use WinXP (not a dual boot) instead, and I do have a previous version of Win98SE disc.

why don't you just use linux if you wanna be a cheap @ss, piracy hurts everyone.

not a bad deal on the upgrade, but it would be better to get an oem copy of xp pro for $5 more.

Well, another way you could get a cheap LEGAL FULL copy of XP Pro is to attend a Microsoft .NET seminar. I have attended 7 and in all of them, they give you little gift bags when you walk in the place, and in the little gift bags are some goodies, including XP Pro. :) So I have 7 copies laying around, well, I just gave them away... LOL

Yes...I have done this with XP Home and Pro upgrade cds many times...once you agree to the license terms, it will look for the installed OS...if it does not find one, it will promt you for the CD (it must be a full version of Win 98, ME or 2K)...

Well, I was gonna thank you for that link but I ran into a wee problem with the CD they sent me. Below is the E-mail I sent them:

"I've received the MS Windows XP PRO OEM that I ordered earlier this month . Unfortunately none of the the 4 CD drives in the 3 computers I tried were able to read the CD you sent to me. It appears to be a blank CD. I am unable to install the OS software and will require either a working authentic replacement Windows XP PRO oem full version CD or a refund to my credit card which you should still have on file. I do not understand how I could have received a faulty CD and ask you to quickly reply as to how you wish to correct the error."

~sigh~

Uh huh, let me guess this is you selling those illegal copies there? A little self promotion of your ebay piracy selling business on the side?

There are LEGAL ways to get windows XP for free. Attend a MS seminar, or if you work in retail take an hour or so to take training on MS's site and get it free from them. I've gotten several copies free direct from MS of windows XP pro full retail package.

BTW, anyone who wants to get legal copies on ebay, be VERY careful you read what they are selling. Make sure they say unopened, unused, retail, shrinkwrapped boxes. Otherwise you just might get a burned copy. And burned copy people often dont tell you its burned, they just omit the part about unopened retail shrinkwrapped. And make sure to get them from a seller who is not in malyasia/taiwan/china. Also they should have good positive feedback (and not just 5 or 10). A favorite defrauding technique on ebay is to sell windows XP full, or office, or photoshop, because all of those items are high ticket/price items and if they cheat you they can get a lot of money in a single transaction.

Yes, I've done plenty of full installs (wiped clean, no other previous OS on the HD) with only the upgrade version. You still need the previous OS CD handy, as it will ask you to insert it so it can verifiy, but it doesn't load anything and only takes about 30-60 seconds to the whole process.

edit: damn, gotta read the whole thread, this one was answered about 10 times before me. :) sorry all.

can you install xp home/pro upgrade if the version of windows you have currently is one of those system restore disks? or does it need to be a full version of windows? also...is it hard to do the upgrade from windows ME to xp?

Try it and see, it might work. You could always check the restore disk and see if it has a directory structure like a windows disk on it.

Easy to upgrade, and you should do it ASAP, windows ME was the worst and least stable of the entire line (95,98,98SE, etc).

Maybe you guys didnt realize this but Academic Superstore has the same thing for like $50 cheaper.
That's where I bought my copy of XP like a year ago.

Windows XP Pro Upgrade - $89.95 free shipping

I don't think there's tax.

All you have to do is provide a copy of your student ID to them. I believe I sent a scan to them. I think a fax also works.

Enjoy.
