Win2k is definately the best O/S MS ever made. check this thread out Win2k vs WinXP Pro
XP really does have some good features that 2K will never have,
like?

Heh - hmmmmm, maybe some stupid pretty color themes, a task manager that takes 30 seconds to come up sometimes when you hit CTRL+ALT+DEL, that stupid activation. Take it from Bill Gates, Win2k is better.

something wrong with your computer yo, my task manager comes up instantly.

Not always. I actually fired the guy who programmed that so poorly - it isn't the same as Win2k.

Exactly, you can disable whatever themes you want. And if you have a problem with task manager it clearly isn't something that everyone has, my copy of xp pro gives me the task manager just as quickly as in 2k.

I run XP Pro SP1 with no problems. The only time the system will freeze is if I try and play NFS HP 2 and forget to make my second toolbar Not Always On Top it will do some crazy sh-t. I don't know who to blame but I cope. Win 2K is a great OS. I recently put in on my Secondary Machine (Pentium II 333) and noticed a big performance increase from Windows 98.

I have a legit copy of XP Pro by the machine and the coporate version installed so I do not have to activate. SP1 even installs on it.

Me too. I got the student version of XP home - $5 through my university and one time activation for life of the machine. The activation took just under 3 minutes. I thought it was a simple task and I was surprized at how short the call was.

It is very simple, they haven't even bitched when I re-installed less than a week after the last time I installed. I was moving hardware around, & had finally decided on what the configuration would be. I did a re-install at that point. They asked me how many PC's I had it on, I told them one. They asked me what my reason for re-installing was, I told them, & they gave me the activation key. Still a very quick & painless process.

I do have a corporate copy available to me, but why bother? I legally own XP Pro, so I might as well use it.

Punching in and writing down 100 characters is not fun and painless.

There is no point anymore, arguing on ATOT is a waste of time.

I have legal licences of both XP Pro (volume licencing) and Win 2K Pro and the last 2 itterations of my box at both work and home have both been Win XP Pro. On the other hand 95% of the rest of the campus I support runs Win 2K Pro, there are advanatges to both and arguing that one is better than the other is just like arguing Intel/AMD, Windows/Macintosh, Windows/Linux, etc etc. There are too many people who seem to think there is only one answer, this is a multiple guess world and just because something worked for someone else doesnt mean it's the best answer for you.

My 2 cents...

Mac OS X doesn't require a serial number at all. Just put in the CD and start installing. :)

Of course they did, Mac has been trying to catch up to Microsoft for years. That is why Bill Gates bailed them out and keeps them alive financially.

Is this why Microsoft didnt sue Apple for stealing their GUI ideas?

Exactly because then Microsoft would have to counter sue and then Apple would be in financial ruin and then Microsoft would be in trouble because they have no viable competition in the market place. Obviously Linux is not so they need Apple.

Use your regular XP Pro key and dont reinstall the OS more than once every 6 months. I believe that if you wait more than 6 months it doesnt make you call them.

I am only messin with you on the Mac thing. :)
Also I did not re-install, I mearly got a new system board. I did not want to re-install.
That is what made me mad. All I did was get a new system board. Under 98 on the same hard drive with all the same programs I had 11 system boards. I change a lot. I never had a problem except once with the AGP but I got that fixed. No formatting, no re-install. Now I have to wait to get a new system board... I can not wait.. wait.. errrr!!!
I gut my computer weekly, it is a sickness, plus it pisses my wife off

I know :D

Actually I swap hardware often as well, I'm just glad we have a volume licencing agreement so I dont have to deal with the product activation. I do agree that if you change hardware as often as you claim to the constant product activation would become a nuicence.

That is probably the most intelligent reply I have ever read on this board...

Viper, what are those features that have you use XP of Win2K? Thanks, I'd really am curious.

I have Win2K (after the second service pack) and I'm now thinking about doing away with the windows 98 partition I have. I'm interested in XP but it'll have to be specatcular reasons for adding it.

Fast user switching, remote desktop, & restore points (very useful for testing new HW/software configurations) were specifically what I was referring to.

Not to mention the UI improvements, newer hardware support, etc.

Fast user switching, remote desktop, & restore points
Other new (post 2K) features that some people may find useful:

[*]Remote Assistance
[*]User State Migration (Read Files and Settings Transfer Wizard.)
[*]Device Driver Rollback
[*]Internet Connection Firewall
[*]Encrypting File System (EFS) with Multi-user Support (In Win 2K only a single user could access the encrypted document)
[*]Smart Card Support
[*]Increased Application/Hardware Compatibility (more compatable than 2K)
[*]Integrated CD Burning
[*]DualView (Say you have a dual head video and want the 2 monitors to act like 2 monitors rather than a single large one)
[*]Offline Files and Folders can be encrypted (in Win 2K you could not encrypt them)
[*]ClearType
[*]Network Bridge
[*]Network Location Awareness
[*]Wireless Networking (better support than 2K)

Like I said before, many/all of these may not be useful to your specific situation. If they arent than Win 2K is still a good OS.
