Window XP is so silly stupid-My Rant

I get Windows XP right.. ok I install and it is ok. Running nicely I guess so far. The install was stupid and I had like a 40 alpha numeric set to type in for the CD Key. I am so sick of these stupid CD Keys. I hate them. Software pirates WILL crack them so they only irritate the casual user like myself. Now for the rant. I have XP and I install a different motherboard because I sold mine. XP comes up after I reboot and says I have to RE-Activate... WTF..? Ok so I go through the whole screen and then it tells me I can not activate and I have to call. WTF again. Ok so I call and I have to type in this 40 number string using the keypad on the phone... ERRRRRR!!!!!! Ok so after that it says that I have to hold for assistance. Ok then the assistant makes me give her the whole number again.... geez stupid. No I have to type in a 48 friggin alpha numeric code just to use the operating system I bought. Man this is just dumb. I friggin hate the idiots that came up with this. Well I guess XP is not for people that change system boards a great deal. I change system boards like I change my socks. DOH!!!

The pirated version is much better. NO activation(someone hacked it out), but you still have to put in the cd key. It was also available a week before XP pro hit the stores. Not that I use it, but i'm just saying.

No pirated version is needed. Install pro and use the corporate key. Corporate and Pro are the same, the key sets them apart. AFAIK.

AFAIK, changing your system board with Win2k/WinXP installed is NOT a good idea...trust me!!! If you think having to reactivate is bad, try not being able to mount your friggin' boot partition!!!

XP really does have some good features that 2K will never have, the minor inconvenience of a 5 minute phone call to re-install my OS is well worth it to me.

I had to call MS when i uninstalled Office 2000 from one machine and put it on new machine. Luckily it only took 5 minutes to make the call to get them to update their database.

I just ask Why.. Why the FVCK does microsoft need to jerk me around with this stupid activation crap and keep me from changing my system board. I bought the software and I could not care less if others did not. I could not care a little bit if microsoft loses pennies off their billions. I have another system board that I want to put in to see how it runs and I will have to do that again. It makes me nuts... err I want to fight someone.

I have called MS Product Activation three times (twice for Windows XP, once for my sister's Office XP) - Both times were <5 minutes, absolutely painless.

Me too. I got the student version of XP home - $5 through my university and one time activation for life of the machine. The activation took just under 3 minutes. I thought it was a simple task and I was surprized at how short the call was.

Might be that. Documentation mentioned how activation was taken out, but it could if just been a different key.

It is very simple, they haven't even bitched when I re-installed less than a week after the last time I installed. I was moving hardware around, & had finally decided on what the configuration would be. I did a re-install at that point. They asked me how many PC's I had it on, I told them one. They asked me what my reason for re-installing was, I told them, & they gave me the activation key. Still a very quick & painless process.

I do have a corporate copy available to me, but why bother? I legally own XP Pro, so I might as well use it.

A week? Friend of mine took a picture with the original burned Devil's Own copy in front of MS's headquarters (in front of the countdown to XP board).... 28 days before it was released. Also, the activiation wasn't 'hacked out.' They got ahold of the corporate version (which has no activation).

Yea. I guess I do not understand the logic in it (not that many things in this world make sense, most things are stupid in some way). Why make an annoyance just for the sake of being annoying. Did Microsoft really think that this junk would slow pirating of software.. no they are not that dumb. So why did they do it. And why the FVCK do they need so damn many numbers and letters in that code. Man they keep getting longer and longer. I hate that.

I know i'm slow. I didn't even try for it....my RA got a copy and hooked everyone up. I usually wait a while after things are out so everyone gets it and the servers are back up to speed so I don't wait in line for days or get < 1 kb/sec.

most ppl on this board use Win2k Pro for a reason. I installed WinXP Pro and i had all kinds of problems. Now I am back to Win2k and probably will not upgrade to any future MS Operating System especially after hearing all that stuff about Longhorn. Hopefull my transition to Linux will pass off smoothly. Win2k is definately the best O/S MS ever made.

My university pays Microsoft a small fee for that priveledge (I think it is $20 per student). So I guess indirectly it cost me more than $5. However I also picked up Office XP for $10 and Visual Basic for $0 under that deal. So spreading that $20 out over 3 programs, XP cost me a total of ~$12. I could have very easilly taken the corporate version from my department and installed it at home, but for just a few bucks I went the legal route. This wouldn't have been possible for Microsoft to offer that deal if there weren't activation keys. Think of how rampant the copying would be - OK it is still rampant, but it is much lessened with the activation keys.

Note: there is one more drawback, legally I must graduate to keep it installed - but I'm sure the dropouts don't care about that.

Heh - hmmmmm, maybe some stupid pretty color themes, a task manager that takes 30 seconds to come up sometimes when you hit CTRL+ALT+DEL, that stupid activation. Take it from Bill Gates, Win2k is better.

For a long time I as well was a Win2k user with a fully licensed version of WinXP Pro sitting in my desk drawer. When I finally corrupted my Win2k install, I decided to give WinXP a try. I have to say, OS-wise there are only benefits - quicker loading time, better gaming speeds, etc.

Then I tried to install a new 100GB 7200rpm HDD and use Western Digital's HDD-copy utility to transfer over everything. OY. Now I wouldn't have minded if I got a screen requiring me to call a number and re-activate. Instead, I got a Windows Product Activation error with no solution. Fantastic, so it was either reinstall EVERYTHING or stick to my old 17GB 5700rpm drive. :disgust: By the way, if anyone knows a way around that I'd love to hear it.
