window XP cleartype is awesome!!

i just upgraded win2k pro to winxp pro corporate (no activation) and wow. its looks great. lots of the effects slow my p3-850 laptop a lot, so i turned them off. but i left the new interface and skin on, and cleartype. Cleartype is an awesome feature, its basically FSAA for text on LCDs. looks awesome.

Absotively! It's especially good for us old guys who use 15" SXGA+ and UXGA screens! Besides, it just looks cool. Works kinda neat on my Sony monitor at home, too.

it's alright but i'm not sure why people use it. it slows down my laptop considerably, and LCD screens are already incredibly clear, the cleartype just seems to blur everything.

on another note...a lot of people in my dorm here have LCD screens and they're running them in the wrong resolution and it looks like crap. i don't wanna tell them though they might be embarrassed

Cleartype is another kind of "font smoothing" designed specifically for LCD displays. You get to it by right-clicking on the WinXP desktop, selecting Properties, choosing the Appearance tab on the Display Properties dialog, and clicking on the Effects button. The Effects dialog that pops up lets you choose whether or not to "Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts", the choices being standard (the old style) or ClearType.

That's interesting. I paid close attention to performance issues when I enabled all of the special effects on my Dell Inspiron 7500 (500 MHz PIII). It has a decent older graphics subsystem (ATI Rage Mobility P with 8 Megs) and the SXGA+ (1400x1050) screen. I noticed no difference in system speed. Everything pops! I suppose the effect on performance varies according to the particular display subsystem being used. (?)

As for not being sure why people use it, I suspect that you're not an old, blind codger like me. ClearType makes the characters just a little fatter. As for making things blurry, well, heck, just wait until you whippersnappers get a few years on ya. Then I'll show ya what blurry looks like!

i've got a savage ix 4mbon my laptop and it seems to make no difference in speed. all the transparency effects seem to do the most damage
