Window tint illegal?

I always knew window tint on the windshield and front windows were illegal, but what about in the rear? Today I went to a local shop to buy Window tint to put only on the rear (5%) and the guy said it was illegal in general. Is this true?

Lots of states ban below 20% on the rears.

NY Law
Top 6 inches of front windshield
70% front windows
70% of rear
no limit on rear windshield

obviously i understand that more windows = more money...
but, how much does it generally cost to get this done? or does it vary by how much tinting is done?

just curious

totally varies on location. around here $140-150 for 4 doors, $130-140 for 2 doors. Usually front strip is included if you want it. in FL its 28% front/ 15% back and rear. Some places will do more in the front if you ask.

Many places now using a computer to cut it so its a quicker less involved job.

I paid $150 to my guy, and he does superb work.

That is the two side windows and rear window of a 2001 camaro

For me free because a friend of mine is doing it. I built his PC and helped him overclock it, he helps me with my car. 😛

Some states don't bother with rear tint because on some trucks you can't see out the rear because of cargo anyways. Others want the cops to be able to see in when they pull someone over.

I just paid $189 for my wife's new 4-door Civic. The installers came to the house and put the max legal tint on.

If you get pulled over the cops have the option to fine you ... and then the tinting will no longer be free. Research the max legal tint allowed and install that.

The price for tinting also depends on the brand of tint used. The place I got mine done ranged from $90 for crappy tint that will probably bubble in a few months to $175 for the LLumar/3m. I ended up getting the LLumar tint and doing the whole car for $250 (rear and back sides at 5%, fronts at 35%, and strip on top of the windshield at 5%).

Just don't get that barftastic strip across the top of the windshield like all the little kiddies.

Be VERY careful with that. A lot of cars come with a little tint built in. So that 35% you put on now test at 31, you fail. I usually told others to play it safe and get something that has 5% away from the limit. Also soem tints (mostly cheaper) when they age will darken up a little. Mostly the dyes or materials used break down and leave dark areas. not sure about tint today as I have not really seen it and/or used it in a while.

In NC when I did inspections it was 35% and I think the margin was 2-3%. So 33% would pass.

I'm photophobic (can't take bright light) so I have a letter from my optometrist that allows me to legally tint any window as dark as I want. My last car was 5% on side and rear windows, my new car will be a little lower (maybe even mirrored, but I'm not sure how it would look).

Shitty part is that I have to roll down the windows at night.

I usually go 1 grade below the max for the state just so you don't get hassled.

Most of the shops here will go as dark as you want, but if you go beyond what's legal they want to be paid in cash and won't warranty it.

I live in NH. It sucks being in one of the 5 states where front window tinting is illegal.

I did it anyway. Only time you need to be careful is if you go to Concord. There is a statey out there who lives to write window tint tickets. Down here in southern NH I've never had one problem. The reason I know about that statey is because he got me once..actually pulled me over for the tint which most won't do. The tickets is no biggie...$40 and won't affect insurance.

I refused to go with the SUV look...

Here's 35% all around...the legal tint level.

my state ( minnesota ) it is illegaly to tint any window of the car below 50%... I have my rear window 5% my sides 15% .... I like it, I just roll my windows down when I will be driving around a cop or something.

Granted, I have been pulled over for two tint tickets in 1 year, 130$ a pop....oh wells 😀
