Window Size

Not sure if this is best here or Software for Windows.

Windows will save window attrivutes like size and location when you exit the program, this I am cool with.

Here is the problem, in Windows 7 if I resize either IE 8 or Chrome so that it stretches from the top of my screen to the bottom (but is not full screen, I do not need a 1920 pixel wide browser) and then exit the program, the next time I launch it after a restart (I spend most of my time in OS X) the browser will be whatever size it was before I stretched it top to bottom.

Very annoying since in IE 8, that default size is pretty annoying.

How do I fix this such that when I exit the program and restart, the window will stretch from top to bottom.

Also, is there a way to make the taskbar an impenetrable wall?

I have nothing to contribute other than it's not Windows that remembers their positions, it's the applications themselves. It's hard to believe that MS hasn't added window memory to their window manager considering the window manager I'm using right now has had that feature for over a decade now.

I mean they have some degree of memory, but for some reason it plus aero snap is not so much with the working.

If it wasn't for the fact that I only use Windows for gaming, I probably wouldn't even have it on there.

Try holding down "SHIFT" while closing the Window. I have about a 95% success rate with this method in XP, not sure about 7.

Ok, so it took me until now to fire up Windows. Holding SHIFT does nothing useful.

This is strange. I don't have this problem. Windows 7 holds windows size AND position (I also use two monitors) on Chrome and IE8 regardless of what size or place i put them. Close program and reopen, its in the same spot and the same size. Close program, reboot, and reopen, same spot and size. I couldn't tell you, unless its a preference somewhere that is turned off on yours, what is going on. I did poke a round a bit in Internet Options and didnt see anything that had to do with window size or position, but you might try hitting the reset button under "Reset internet Explorer's settings", and see if that helps at all.

Do you have the windows running from the top of the screen to the taskbar? If I don't have them set that way, then it isn't a problem. But it seems like Aero Snap breaks window memory for me. Is there a way to turn it off? I don't mind going back to the old way if it means that I can get my windows to open up 'correctly'.

That finally fixed it, thanks sivart.

Next question. On OS X, the menubar is a solid wall, and the bottom of the screen is as well, meaning that if I am resizing a window, and resize all the way to the top or bottom of the screen, it stops there, I cannot keep going, there are no latent pixels being covered. Do you know of anyway to do that in Windows? At least with the taskbar?
