Window defender

Software forum, not General Hardware 😉

Personally, I use a good antivirus software, a Limited account, and a disallowed Software Restriction Policy, combined with Common Sense 2.01 and the Skeptical Nature add-on pack. No signature updates required, no system slowdown, and very effective. 😀 Full hardware DEP is also a good idea.

PSA: everyone running Windows, try out Secunia's software checkup thingie and see if you need security updates for stuff like QuickTime, Java, WinAmp, your browsers, your email clients, etc. 🙂

Mech,

Thanks for that tool. I will be sure to use it on the computers I help fix. That is a great tool. I found out that my Flash Player was at risk and I went ahead and updated to the newest available version. Thanks again!

Also in regards to the OP, I fix computers for a living and when I say fix I mean remove spyware/viruses as well as troubleshoot/fix hardware issues. I just put Windows Defender on as an added layer of security as opposed to just depending strictly on that piece of software from stopping malicious pieces of software from running on clients' computers.

Windows Defender is junk IMHO always an error updating and very ineffective

I don't have any problems with Defender updates, and it has managed to remove one or two pieces of junkware from my kids' machines that other programs couldn't automatically cure. One of these was TheBestInternet.Aurora, which was a pain in the ass.

I have to agree here. I installed it a few weeks ago just to see how it would work and have decided to keep it. Never a problem with it and updates go without a problem. It has found a couple of problems that other spyware/anti-virus programs havent.
I usually don't care for MS software like this but Defender seems to work pretty well.

I don't care for Windows Defender.

I use McAfee VirusScan 8.0 Enterprise + Search and Destroy + Don't go to web sites with spy ware. I don't have any problems. Never had a virus.
