Guys,

Those that use Winamp, have you seen the following? W/ version 2.65 the playlist would fill rather quickly, w/ the time of each song. W/ version 2.7 that fill time seems considerably longer, and after the titles are filled in, Winamp has to go through the same process again, filling in the times.

It sure seems to me that 2.7 is a step backwards from 2.65. What have your observations been w/ 2.7, compared to 2.65 (or earlier versions)?

Plus, 2.7 doesn't seem to have the same volume output, compared to 2.65, and this is w/ EQ settings the same. Any thoughts on this?

winamp 2.7 is f*ked

I am using winamp 2.666 + winamp 2.2's MPEG audio decoder, it is the only one that does perfect decode. It has the real Fraunhofer IIS decoder, not the other crappy ones
 
Actually, the Nitrane decoder was dumped in WinAmp 2.666 and has been replaced by a new, optimised version of the Fraunhoffer codec. Unlike the decoder in 2.22, the one in 2.666 has been optimised for MMX and SSE. Quality is much better than the Nitrane decoder, and almost as good as the much slower 2.22 decoder.

2.7 contains a number of fixes for the new Fraunhoffer encoder, although I do agree it does seem slow.

If quality is something that you are interested in, I suggest you try the MAD Plug-in for Winamp....it will REALLY blow you away on MP3s with a greater than 128kbps bit rate.
 
How would I use this to optimize tracks to burn to a cd rom? Just run it before recording?

I use the MAD plugin from the link above. Just load up the MP3s using WinAmp and then send it through the disk writer plugin.....it takes just a few seconds to convert the song to WAV format. You can then burn to music CD.....quality is much better than straight using something like Nero to convert to WAV and then music CD.
 
Thanks....one more question. I have an AWE 64 sound card..will this support anything above 16 bit sound?

I have used Winamp for a few years but never tweaked anything except for using the WowThing plug-in. I can send the file directly to my cd-rw using the disk writer plug-in?
Is there a good website for an ignoramus like me to learn more about this...so I don't have to bug you with a million questions?

What the disk writer plugin (included with WinAmp) simply does is convert an MP3 to wav format. After that, you need to use a program such as Nero or Adaptec EZCD to burn the wav files as CD Player readable green book format. Is that the answer you were looking for?

Yes....the SBAWE64 only supports 16-bit output. I can't even get 24-bit to run on SBLive.
