I used to love Winamp. I started using it when it was at like version 1 or 2, but when 3 came out I was really pissed at it and stopped using it. I also got a mac, so it's been a while since I've used it. Now that I use a PC again, I'm trying out version 5 and so far I really like it. There are a couple really confusing things about it though...

  • Always-On-Top:
I've looked through the (many) preferences, but I still can't seem to figure out why winamp is always on top. For example, if I click on the firefox browser behind it, winamp is still on top, even though firefox is selected.

  • Plugins:
One of the best things I used to like about winamp were the plugins. I don't really know of any specific things I need right now, but are there any that you would recommend? One that I've been trying to fine is a good, free alarm plugin, so that I can use winamp to wake me up to music; always a good thing.

The only thing I don't like about Winamp is that you have to pay 20 bucks for the "pro" version, and the only difference is that you can rip CD's. That's it. I just use iTunes to do that, also because it tends to organize the music automatically in folders very well. Other than that iTunes for PC sucks (IMO).

Thanks, TBN

If you are using WindowsXP make a scheduled task to play a song that 's what i use. I wake up every morning at 7:00 to Del Amitri's "Lets Kiss This Thing Goodbye".

@ Anubis: I can't believe I didn't notice that setting. Wow that was way too easy...

@ ManyBeers: I am using WindowsXP, but I don't know what scheduled tasks are. How do you do that? I'm assuming it's not a setting withing Winamp. Is there some way to schedule the computer to open Winamp and start playing a playlist? That would be awesome...

Oh, I found out how to create a task, but there are two problems:

1.) I believe all it does is open Winamp

2.) When I try to create the task, I get an error message that reads:
An error has occurred while attempting to set task account information. The specific error is:
0x80070005: Access is denied.
You do not have permission to perform the requested operation.

I'm on the only account on my computer, and I didn't put a password in because I don't have one. Even if I did get that working though, how would I get it to start playing music (rather than just open?)

Thanks for the help...

Alright, now I've got an idea:

If I could get a scheduled task to work to open winamp (and wake up the computer) before the alarm time, then winamp would take care of the actual alarm... Now all I need to do is get the scheduled task thing to work, but I keep getting that error message I pasted above....
