Winamp... 2 or 3?

I used 3 for about 2 months but went back to 2.91 since there's no .APE support in 3. 3 could have been nice, but they never fixed any of the bugs or added support for some of the better features of 2.

i don't like winamps media library that much... if i'm browsing for an artist, say i want to listen to an album... i have to enque the album.. can't just play a song from that album and have it start playing from there. yes, i know it's just one click... but i'm used to itunes 😛 a minor issue. all i need now is direct ipod support and it'd be great 🙂

According to Winamp's own FAQ, Nullsoft is currently working on a plugin to integrate iPod and other audio player support into the Media Library. Prliminary support is already in the ML component.

Zucarita9000: In Winamp 2.91 click on the lighting bolt in Winamp's main window to open the Media Library, you can also hit ALT+L on your KB. It is slightly different from Winamp 3's, but it works great. The next version of Winamp 2, soon to be released has a CD ripper integrated into the library.

Mavrick007: AsI said before, WA3 development is at a standstill for the most part. Might as well consider it abandonware. Currently all resources are going into extending and fixing Winamp 2.x's somewhat limited plugin architecture. Winamp 2.x's plugin limitations where the reason Winamp 3 was created in the first place! So Winamp 2.x will definately continue to be supported and maintained 😀

Wow!

Would you believe that I've used Winamp for years without knowing about the Media Library?

Awesome, thanks alot man! 😀 😀 😀

WinAMP 2.91
I don't use the interface at all, I needed a "WinAMP 2.x compatable" player for use with SysMetrix. SysMetrix can control media files from its interface.

i use winamp 2. why? winamp 3 is too slow, and if you're getting 3 because of the video support, winamp2 has that (its not like i use that anyway). Plus, 2 has waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better and lots more skins then winamp 3.

i use 2.91 i think..3 didnt play the wow thing plugin i use..its a great pluging for winamp to enhance music.

2. Don't need gimmicks, just the great plugins I know and love. Got this kickass one called "Reproduction Control". Among other things it lets you set up hotkeys that you can use anywhere (games) to skip songs, pause, change volume, etc.

I like Winamp 2.95, it doesen't eat so many resources as 3.
I noticed that the ones who are running winamp 2 uses 2.91.... Why I have 2.95?

Nullsoft posted 2.95 on their site for about 7 hours. It was discovered that 2.95 had a few major and annoying bugs. Nullsoft pulled the release from their website and put 2.91 back up.

2.95 was effectively canceled.

2.91 is the most current version. 2.95 is still floating around the internet, however the ONLY new feature it has over 2.91 is the CD ripper that is integrated into the Library, and of course the major bugs.

winamp 2 lite. 3 doesn't have a lite version yet and its so bloated. the skins are really cool in 3 though.

2.91 (or 3) didn't play any of my Ogg Vorbis files for some reason, so i gave up on it.

Confused

How are your Oggs tagged? Some CD rippers, like EAC, stupidly put ID3 tags in Ogg files. This violates the Ogg bitstream. The Ogg plugin in 2.90 and higher sees the ID3 tag data as file corruption and will ethier refuse to play the file, or stop when it reaches that point. The older version of the plugin will attempt to play the data, but will throw it out upon failure to do so, but it will at least play the file.

If you search on Winamp.com's forums there is a link to a program that can remove the ID3 tags from all your Oggs. This will solve the playback problem with 2.90 and up. Also note that any Ogg decoder based upon Xiph's newest code will have the same problems as Winamp when it tries to play Ogg files with ID3 tags.

I have the same problem. I rip to ogg using oggshell. I'm not sure want kind of tags it adds (the tags don't look like the id3v2 mp3 tags). It plays fine in 2.81 however. It plays in 2.90, but there are gaps in-between songs like there are in mp3's (doesn't do that in 2.81). I've tried using an in_vorbis.dll that worked with 2.81... but it didn't work. 2.91 doesn't play ogg files at all. I'm not sure what's wrong. I'd rather not delete all my tags. Although converting them would be nice...

EDIT: I'd also like to add that .wav's lack the gapless playback they had in 2.81. And they didn't have any tags at all.
