Winamp... 2 or 3?

2.91

Development on 3 has for the most part stopped. Nullsoft is currently the process of bringing Winamp 3's plugin AND free form skin API to Winamp 2. The working name for the new player is Winamp 5 (2+3=5 🙂)

Winamp 2.91 already brought in the Media Library (great feature!) and Video support that 3.x has. If you don't want them, just disable the plugins.

2.95 beta, soon to be released, has a CD ripper built into the Media Library, uses LAME to encode to MP3.

Later releases will begin to introduce Wasabi (WA3) plugin support and free form skins. All via plugins of course, just disable/delete the plugins if you do not want the features.

it drives me nuts that you can't change your file icons in 3 like you could in two. mine defaulted to that little wave (digital signal) picture...i hate that icon. so anyways, i reverted back to 2.😕

Yep. Until Winamp uses Foobar's kernel streaming thingy. MAD just isn't the same! I really like Winamp2's interface though.

I'm using 2.81

2.91 (or 3) didn't play any of my Ogg Vorbis files for some reason, so i gave up on it.

I use Winamp 2 because of all Winamp3's bloat problems.

One thing that I do miss from 3, though, is the sidebar playlist menu where you could set up a menu of playlists to quickly switch between. I found a plugin that does something similar (does it in another panel), but it just isn't the same. 🙁

WTF?!? I just performed a resource usage test. Winamp 3 was using 7MB of RAM and 20MB of virtual memory, pretty much the same as WMP9.

Winamp 2 is only using 3MB of RAM and 4MB of virtual memory.... what is up with that?

How are your Oggs tagged? Some CD rippers, like EAC, stupidly put ID3 tags in Ogg files. This violates the Ogg bitstream. The Ogg plugin in 2.90 and higher sees the ID3 tag data as file corruption and will ethier refuse to play the file, or stop when it reaches that point. The older version of the plugin will attempt to play the data, but will throw it out upon failure to do so, but it will at least play the file.

If you search on Winamp.com's forums there is a link to a program that can remove the ID3 tags from all your Oggs. This will solve the playback problem with 2.90 and up. Also note that any Ogg decoder based upon Xiph's newest code will have the same problems as Winamp when it tries to play Ogg files with ID3 tags.

i don't like winamps media library that much... if i'm browsing for an artist, say i want to listen to an album... i have to enque the album.. can't just play a song from that album and have it start playing from there. yes, i know it's just one click... but i'm used to itunes 😛 a minor issue. all i need now is direct ipod support and it'd be great 🙂

I use winamp3 and don't mind it, but it's not good for videos.
It usually ends up making videos different colors even with the right codec installed.

Winamp2 is still better and I will continue to use it if they continue support with new features.

I use 3 because I actually found a decent skin for WinAmp that is small and out of the way. I would recommend 2 over 3, though.
