Win98se wont load video drivers and make it to the OS

Can you hook a brother up on this one.

I am building the third box for the kids. It needs to be a dual boot Win98se and WinXP. Everything is fine until I attempt to load the Nvidia Reference driver (45.x). Win98se crashes never to come back up.

I made a new raid-0 array 64kb. Did a clean fdisk. Made two partitions (30 and 50 gb). Loaded Win98se on C:

I know the hardware works, it previously was rock solid in Win XP, but for some reason Win98se wont play nice.

System:
Epox 8k7a+ with raid-0 on the highpoint 370 controller
AMD 1.4 running stock (for now)
Two WD 40gb hd
4@256 pc2100 mushkin ram
Bios is latest rev and running and failsafe (tried optimal, no change)
Video is BFG Asylum TI5200 128mb (vga only)
Sound blaster live value
3com 905b

I tried the older Nvidia drivers, and none of them worked either. I went back to the most recent three versions.

The system loads the drivers then never gets fully into the OS after I re-boot. I have tried to patch up fully then load, then no patch and load. Same thing, wont get to OS with video driver.

Help a brother out.

Thanks !

Can you get into Safe Mode on 98 to install drivers that way?

And why are you using 98 if you have XP? XP can run everything 98 can not to mention being better in more ways then one.

I can get into safe mode, but I cant load the drivers and have it post to the os in normal mode.

There are a lot of older win 95 / 3.1x games that don't work in XP. Trust me, they don't.

Thanks tho

No, It can't. Don't get me wrong, I love XP, But a lot of my daughter's games just won't hang it in XP. Compatibility mode or not.
Dthind,
The Epox board has the VIA chipset correct? Have you loaded the latest VIA 4 in 1 chipset drivers?

I did load the latest 4in1, no change. I am pretty confident it is the nvidia reference driver. If I go to far back in the drivers there is no support for the ti 5200. I could probably tweak (or find a tweak) for the tnt drivers for the card, but that might be just cutting my legs off.

You have the same problem I do. My daughters games (some of them) simply will not play in XP. These games are 640x480 @ 256 color. They will not play in any other mode.

I had problems on new drivers as well and settled on the 40.72 set which seemed to play nice.

You got those drivers to work with the fx 5200 ?

Correction to my above post, I have the FX 5200 as there is no TI 5200

As of now, I still can not get the Beast to work. My only remaining guess is that I have a conflict with the highpoint 370 on irq11 and the FX 5200 wanting to be on irq 11. This is a guess and a rather lame one at that.

Old News:

Update

I actually had 2@512 ram pc2100 (not 4@256 pc2100).

I removed one of the ram sticks and WhamO it worked.

Wierd.
