Win98SE problems on CPU's faster than 1.2GHz?

I heard that Win98 has problems with CPU speeds above 1.2GHz. This was news to me, I haven't heard about this anywhere except from this one person. This guy does hardware/software compatibility testing for a MAJOR company, so he's got my attention. Has anyone heard anything about this? Is there a patch, simular to what Microsoft did for K6's over 350MHz and Win95?
I have my doubts, but while this post is bouncing around, I'll check system configs and see how many people are running Win98 over 1.2GHz.

I can happily say that both Win 98SE and Win2000 both operate fine at 1500MHz.
I have 3 systems in the house over 1.2GHz and all operate fine.

Another Win98 user running a 1.3Ghz @ 1.4Ghz. Not a single problem. I wish you were a little specific about what your "Guru" friend was referring to. There is indeed a problem with the shutdown wherein the HDD Cache not being flush before power is shut off. But there's a fix posted on Win98. Not all systems are affected though.

is windows even that involved with the cpu? i doubt it is. maybe that's why it can run with sub 250mhz cpus, yet scale up to 2ghz+.

I stopped by a freinds on the way to work this evening and he told me of what the "guru" had told him. My freind asked him because we both have KT7-RAIDs with 1.2GHz Athlon C's, that we can't get to run at 12.5 X 100. Both systems lock up just before the the icons in the start bar finish loading. Both systems will run Win98 in safe mode at 12.5 X 100, but not in normal mode. I've run Prime95 in safe mode at 12.5 X 100 and had no problems.
I didn't have time to get any details. I told him I hadn't heard anything about Win98 having problems at higher speeds, then had to head on into work. I took a look around the forum, and found plenty of people running Win98 at 1.2GHz or higher. Maybe I'll run into the "guru" at my freinds son's birthday party this weekend, and be able ask him dirrectly.

First it was 64/128/256 MB RAM maximum and now a maximum CPU speed? LOL, the things people come up with... ;)

No, I'm happy to report that my 1.333 GHz TBird is running very merrily with Windows 98SE. You can completely forget about maximum processor speeds and other such nonsense. :)

Actually, there was a relatively recent problem with Win98SE and WinME with fast processor and fast hard drives. Apparently, Windows shut down so quick it didn't have time to write the contents of the hard drive cache to disk. It was patched though.

This is hilarious .. seeing everyone with 1500MHz machines running Windows 98. :p

C'mon guys.. What are you waiting for? Get a new distro of Linux and get Win2K and dualboot 'em. :p But don't run win98 !! hehe.. seriously though, why run it at all unless you're playing old dos games that 2k has no support for? In almost any other case Win2K will be faster.. and it's better for stability and security.. :)

It's your choice of course.. but I am just curious as to why anyone would still want to use Win98 at all. I find it annoying to use after using 2K for so long! I like the way 2K handles things, and the focus. I hate 9x for that.. You be typing something, and it steals the focus and you end up typing onto another window and having to retype your document/message again... It's quite annoying. In win2k this happens far less, so it's a lot less aggravating. :) This is what I've found, at least.

As for WinXP... it's the WinME of Win2K. :p It's still got a length to go. My cdroms didnt' work properly, it was slower overall, and had a very tacky user interface. :p The slowness could be attributed to remaining debugging code, though. As for the tacky interface, I think they just messed up on that. I hate the new start butotn thing.. definitely will not be using that IF I decide to use XP in the future. Otherwise though it's cool, I like the overall look once I've tweaked it to my liking, but I kind of prefer Win2K's professional-like interface and setup. Setting up XP was a breeze, though, so I can't complain about that really.

Anyways.. I'm not on a CPU over 1.2GHz, so I can't say there's any problems, but by the looks of it, it's not happening to many people. But again, I don't know why anyone would still use Win98, with all its disadvantages. I find Win2K much better for me, even at 500MHz. =)

Well I really dont need i2k on my pc at home, I use it at work! And 98se is faster on
my machine than i2k! My home machine is for gaming not running office 2k! i2k is a resource hog whether u want to admit it to yourself or not! Btw my i2k machine at work crashed twice today!
And I really dont see the connection between a 1.5ghz cpu and i2k!

All the top scores in 3dmark 2k1 are on winme(I dont care for)and 98 systems!
"stability and security.." The only time my machine crahed is when I overclocked too high! Im behind a hardware firewall so security is not an issue!
When xp comes out and goes through 3-4 service packs I might switch to that!
Are you bill gates nephew or somethin?
I think people should use whatever os they feel comfortable with without some lamo like u ranking on it!

I run a dual boot with Win98se and Win2k. No problem at all what so ever. Ask the "Guru" why its not compatible with Win98. ;)

Believe it or not Win98 is still better at gaming , although Win2k is doing tremendously better now that DX8 is out.
Another note 5.1 digital sound isn't supported in Win2k with SB Live cards. So no DVD movie playing in Win2k if you are setup for 5.1...
Many brands of CDRW's still fail to work corectly or at all in Win2k.
nVidia cards still can't see proper refresh rates in games which is always a bummer, so a third party utility has to be used.

I have a dual boot and can testify to these problems.
