After loading win98SE, I get to desktop and I go to 'start - programs - explorer', explorer won't load...as if the system is very busy doing something else...but it isn't! It will load after about 5-10 seconds. I have this also with 'start - configuration - control panel/printers'. And when I open the 'explorer.scf', the start menu hangs until explorer is opened.

But the explorer.exe from the windows map works without any delay! And via the exe I can get into configuration also without delay, right after getting to desktop. It's the explorer.scf and the things in 'start - configuration' that I have this problem with. I don't have the problem in windows 98 'regular', only in SE.
Can someone test this on his win98se machine??

I've disconnected every unnecessary device in my computer and I have no programs running at start up.

And there's something else too:
-When I start up windows 98 SE and I get to desktop, the mouse pointer shows that my computer is still loading (I don't have this in win98)
I find these problems very strange because I've just done a fresh windows installation..just right after I did a format c:, I installed win98 and after that win98SE.

I'm not the only one with these problems...on the win98 newsgroup i've found another person with the exact same problems..he thinks it could be a memory allocation problem

Can someone help plz?? thx

I had a similar problem when doing a fresh install of Win98SE. Apparently Welcome.exe was corrupt or screwed :disgust:(You know that crappy Take the windows tour thing) this caused your couldnt access your HD and start menu didnt refresh. fixed it by going in in safe mode and running msconfig. Disabled welcome.exe and all was roses.

Apparently Welcome.exe was corrupt or screwed

When that Welcome program pops up you can disable it by unchecking the "start this program everytime" check box. Unfortunately I found a bug with this check box and the mouse clicks don't seem to work. Also the box doesn't change state when you have clicked in it.

I eventually disabled it by using the Alt shortcut once, rebooting and using the Alt key again to toggle it off again.

What are you saying? A bug in the welcome.exe? I don't have it in the start up list of msconfig.exe, but, I'll check it out...
