Win98SE problem...plz help

After loading win98SE, I get to desktop and I go to 'start - programs - explorer', explorer won't load...as if the system is very busy doing something else...but it isn't! It will load after about 5-10 seconds. I have this also with 'start - configuration - control panel/printers'. And when I open the 'explorer.scf', the start menu hangs until explorer is opened.

But the explorer.exe from the windows map works without any delay! And via the exe I can get into configuration also without delay, right after getting to desktop. It's the explorer.scf and the things in 'start - configuration' that I have this problem with. I don't have the problem in windows 98 'regular', only in SE.
Can someone test this on his win98se machine??

I've disconnected every unnecessary device in my computer and I have no programs running at start up.

And there's something else too:
-When I start up windows 98 SE and I get to desktop, the mouse pointer shows that my computer is still loading (I don't have this in win98)
I find these problems very strange because I've just done a fresh windows installation..just right after I did a format c:, I installed win98 and after that win98SE.

I'm not the only one with these problems...on the win98 newsgroup i've found another person with the exact same problems..he thinks it could be a memory allocation problem

Can someone help plz?? thx

Echelon,
How old is your CD ROM? I had the same problem with a friend's machine. Check to see if DMA is selected in the device settings. If it is deselect it. This fixed my friend's problem.

Hmm...so one explorer opens immediately, the other takes awhile.

Look at the properties of both shortcuts....are they the same?

Is the "slow" icon pointing to a valid directory?

My two cents....

Also, I have 98SE on a box at home...once the desktop loads, it still takes about 10 seconds for the other junk to finish....after another 30sec for the busy-hourglass pointer to disappear(but system isn't busy...like the mouse pointer didn't refresh).

The Cdrom drive is about 2 years old..it's a 24x. But even with both my cdrom drives and second HD disconnected I'm having the problem.

The shortcut for explorer.scf is linking to a valid directory, but I don't see that a bad link could result in slow loading..explorer wouldn't load at all..and then there's also the control panel.

suggestions??

Is there any difference in the directory they open to, or in the view options you have selected? Mine takes a second or two longer to open the top 'My Computer' level, as it insists on checking the floppy and CD drives for any media first.

I think it hasn't got anything to do with checking the cdrom etc.

I tested the same HD on my older computer..there wasn't a problem, only on my new PC

just a little suggestion here: Why don't you delete the one on the Start-program-explorer and make copy the one that runs faster and paste it to start-program... I think it should solve the problem but if it doesn't work then you can always delete the new one that you create and return back the one that you delete from the recycle bin to the its place back. Just a little suggestion here...

Have you mapped any network drives that are no longer available?

I just reproduced this behavior by mapping a network drive, then disconnecting the network cables. Subsequently when I start up explorer, it chokes trying to access the network device, then continues on after timing out (about 8 seconds).

However, when I ran explorer.csf, I got no such behavior. It just opened up very quickly.

Check your Disconnect Network Drive in the Tools pull down in explorer
and see.
