WIN98SE CD Won't Boot Up! Please Help!

I just nuilt my computer, it's an Epox 8KHA+ Mobo, Athlon XP 1800+ 256 MB DDR RAM etc.

I put the WIN98SE CD in, and it says "DISK BOOT FAILURE, ENTER SYSTEM DISK, AND HIT ENTER" I don't have a floppy drive, what should I do?!

Do you have the CD as the first Boot Device?

Have you set the BIOS for NONE under the Floppy? Also be sure to set the CDROM as the 1st Boot Device

not all win98 cds are bootable!
if yours is one of them, go to bootdisk.com & get a win98 startup disk! 🙂

Do what bacillus said, then boot to floppy, then choose "start with cd-rom support..when done booting, switch to E: drive and type "setup" (minus quotes) and your off. As for no floppy, You will have to dig one up or you should also be able to boot from a zip drive also.

Assuming you have a second computer with a CD-ROM burner...

Download a bootable CD image from here...

Burn that image onto a CD, then boot from that disk, once you?re up, put the Win98 install disk in the drive and you?re set.

FWIW... I?ve been thinking about the value of floppy drives lately, and since they?re so entrenched in PC history (and they cost so little) it really doesn?t make sense not to have one in your system... might also make the task of updating your motherboard BIOS easier as well.

Thanks Escalade, Im trying it now.

My floppy from my old comp broke, one of the pins on the back broke off.

Makes me think your CD-ROM drive isn?t the FIRST boot device... go into you?re system BIOS and make sure you have the CD-ROM drive set as the FIRST boot device, and any reference to the floppy drive set to disable.

I see that in another message, member "ag73" posted a link to his Win98 CD boot image...

...in the "my Documents" folder. It's a .nrg image file (Nero):

If that file fails to boot for you as well, and you have the BIOS set correctly, I would start looking at a hardware problem.
