Win98(se) locking up

Hi,
I was having some problems with Win98, so I reinstalled it. Then it started freezing anywhere from 5 mins to an hour after it booted. So I updated to Win98se, and it still freezes. Can anyone help me out?

You didn't provide much info (like installed hardware, etc...) but I would first start by checking your BIOS settings....

Also, it was running fine for a while, then some programs wouldn't work right (Napster was seen as a Dos application, Gamespy had file errors, and a few other strange things.) Didn't change or add anything recent to the errors happening. Can't figure out why it'd just go bonkers like that. Maybe a virus?

Sounds like a heat issue to me. Check if your fans are working. Provide extra ventilation, see if that helps.

I left it off overnight so it would be real cool in the morning. I tried again and several times windows wouldn't boot. It'd start to load and then just reboot again(??). I finally got it to bood, but it still locks up like crazy. Any more suggestions?

Everytime I have a problem with windows 9X, I go to Maxwell. =). If anybody knows who Maxwell is =) lol than I think you guys would agree. Check it out and maybe your problem will be fixed. I sure fixed may bugs on my system. Here is the link:

I had a problem similar to yours when I upgraded to the socket A platform (700 Mhz T'bird on MSI K7T Pro), system was hanging either during bootup or shortly there after on a regular basis. After running through all the simple solutions (drivers,bios,reseating cards and wires, etc) to no avail, I booted in safe mode went in to control panel and disabled all non-esential hardware (ie everything except hard disk, disk controllers, monitor, key/mouse, and elements under system devices), then rebooted in normal mode successfully. Once you reboot successfully go into Control panel and enable one device, then reboot. Repeat this until you reproduce the system lock up. Once you get the lock up again, then you know the last device you enabled is your problem. Its a laborious process, but it worked for me...turned out my USB expansion card was my problem!! I took it out and this system has run smooth as silk every day since. Good luck!

Thanx I'll give that a shot.
I just tried loading the bios fail safe settings, now in order to get any video output, I have to turn off the system and the monitor, unplug the systems power, then turn on the system, then the monitor. I got everything back to the way I had it before I loaded the bios settings, and it still does it. Dang it I hate computers! LOL

I went into safe mode, disabled all non-essential things and it _still_ locks up. Bout ready to throw my computer out the window. Anyone know how I'd go about finding if it was something essential that was making it lock up?

OK, I got my video to finally boot up normally again. But still can't figure out what's making it lockup =(
