Dear folks,

I get an error when normally loading windows and i can't get anywhere.

While Initializing device VKD:
Windows Protection Error y

Then I tried reinstalling windows so i start the computer with a boot disk, then run windows 98 setup from the cd. I get to " Copying Files needed for windows setup ...", Copies some files and then it freezes. A few times i got that it couldn't find himem.sys but i know its there. The above errors are what i get now.
Any help is very much apreciated. Thanks

Are you trying to re-install Win98 over an existing installation or installing from scratch? If re-installing, can you get into safe mode without the windows protection error?

If so, boot via boot disk and choose "with CD-ROM support". Make a directory on your hard disk called "win98". Copy everything from the "win98" folder on the Win98 CD into it. Then reboot into safe mode. Run System File Checker (start->run->sfc) and check if any of your system files are corrupted. In safe mode, you can't access a CD-ROM drive. That's why you copy the "win98" folder onto your hard disk with the boot disk. If you find a corrupted system file, restore them from the "win98" folder you copied the CD-ROM contents to.

If that doesn't help, I would recommend a fresh install instead of installing over an existing installation. You can do a "deltree c:\windows" or re-format the C: drive. The "deltree c:\windows" may take a long time to complete. "Format c: /s" is much quicker, but you don't want to do that if you have any important data files on your c: drive.

You could also when booting hit the F8 key when your system beeps or right before the 98 splash screen you should get a menu and choose command prompt only.
From the prompt you can type scanreg /restore.
This have a few backups of your regersity that you can restore to a point before you where having the problem to due to the fact that this is usually caused by installation of new drivers/software.
So if you can think of anything that you installed remove the device first then do this.
