Win98 "out of scan range" error

Weird problem, I have a dual boot machine with an ATI AIW card and K7S5A board. In windows 98 I keep getting an Out of Scan Range message in a 2 colored box after the 98 splash screen. the background is completely black with the message in the middle of the screen.
The top portion of th emessage is blue with the word "Information" and the bottom part is white with the above message.
Note, also have a Dell trinitron...the odd thing is that I got this message when i first did my install, but was able to safe mode to 98 and set myself up. I tried running Madden 98 which gave me this message but allowed me to ALtTab to the desktop...now I can't even get that far. The other unusual aspect is that I hear windows loading with the blank screen in front of it...Any clues?
BTW NO problems with Win2K😕

The box is from your monitor.. Windows is setting itself at a refresh rate and/or resolution that your monitor can't handle. So the box that's popped up isn't from windows at all.

Boot up in safe mode, and then select a resolution, colour depth and refresh rate that your monitor can handle.

Although it is a Trinitron monitor, I suggest you select the 60Hz refresh rate, and work yourself up from there. 60Hz is guaranteed to work with every monitor (although it may give you a headache).

Thanx guys...I'll try the refresh rate....only curious thing is that I left the defaults and it works with Win2K...
