Hello,

I am tyring to install Win98 on a new machine and it ain't workin'. I am using a boot disk and CD. I have formatted the hd, but now when I try to run setup off of the cd it starts, but then hangs with the following text appearing on the screen:

Please wait while Setup initializes.
Scanning system registry...

I have waited upwards of a half hour while it "scans" the registry. Please help as I would hate to throw this computer out of my 4th floor window.

If you have the Win98 upgrade CD then it won't install unless it finds an older version of Windows somewhere on your system.

>>>Please wait while Setup initializes.
Scanning system registry... <<< 🙁

Since you do not have an older version of Windows installed on your HD the install / setup program will look forever attempting to find your System Registry. Can't find it and then it just sits there stuck searching forever.

One way is to install an older version of Win95/98 and then do your install over the older Win version. Should work.

If setup says it cannot find Windows on your hard drive then if it will let you, place an older Windows CD in the drive and tell setup to look there for an older version of Windows. Then the install program should proceed. Place your Win98 install CD in the drive.

Run setup with the /nr switch to skip the registry check. Also a good idea to load smartdrv before installing Win98 to speed up the copying to the hard drive. Run setup with /? to see more setup options. Hope this helps.
