Hi,

Am running win98 legally with all available downloads from MS and would like to make a backup of the operating system only, burn it to CD and be able to xfer it to a NEW computer and HD. Dont want to spend all that download time again on dial up.

Know I can just copy the entire C: drive and xfer it or image the drive but have heard that there is a problem when changing MBs and processors and so on.

Any help/experiences appreciated.

you can use ghost to do it but if you are putting it on another computer it will have to find everything on your motherboard all over again and still may not have all the dll's it may need.. good luck

I have done what you described many times. What you should do is copy the Win98 install folder to the C: hard drive before installing Windows 98. This takes about 105MB. Now install Windows 98 and install all the updates you want. If you don't install too many apps, your install will easily fit on on CDR, even without compression, and even including the Win98 setup files. If your OS install starts getting over 1GB of space, it might not compress enough to fit on one CDR. 1GB will actually fit lots of office apps and even a few games.

Create an image with Ghost. Now when you install this image on another computer, the Win98 setup files are available for many of the new devices in the new computer. This is why I include the Win98 directory in the install.

This scenario works best with a relatively clean install. If you have an old install, there will be lots of extra junk in your windows folders and the registry. This might make transfer more difficult. Myself, I have always had good luck with Windows 98 dumping old devices and installing new ones.
