hi all, some serious technical help is needed...

A work mate wanted me to install a new cd-rom drive for him in his old Pentium mmx system and also do a clean install of win98.

The old system recognised the new cd-rom with out a problem, so i wiped the hard drive and re-formatted it and installed win98.

Install goes well, i put in all the local info (time and location etc) the next time the computer boots it goes thru the Plug and play setup and the system hangs on the win98 spash screen.

A search online reveils similar problem exists but none of the fixes have works.

The system consists of:

6.4Gb western digital hard drive (scan disk and surface check say it is fine)

pentium mmx 200mhz chip

asus SP97-V motherboard (SIS chipset)

winfast s280v2 vga card (s3 trio64v2/dx chipset)

2 x 16Mb edo simms

52x cd-rom drive (liteon , brand new)

this system will boot into safe mode, so something some driver is causing it to hang.

i set the video card to standard vga (640 x 480 x 16 colours)...

if i do a selective boot and it lists everything it loads and askes for me to confirm it reaches a list of .vxd files (the last is named msmouse.vxd the hard drive reads for a bit then hangs... replacing this file has not helped).

this link describes exactly what is happening to me better http://www.computing.net/windows95/wwwboard/forum/17123.html

any help is greatly appricated... as i am totaly stumped... :(

thanks :)

You listed "some" of the componets or all...? What about sound card, modem, nic...? Any changes to settings in the bios...? You could try removing all but the video card and do an install and then one at a time install supporting cards till you find the problem...? Also make sure one setting in the bios (plug and play OS is set to NO)...

i have already pulled out the sound card and voodoo 2 card, the modem is external and not hooked up yet and neither are the printer and scanner...

i have tried it with the the plug and play setting both on and off :(

any other ideas...?

I would say a memory upgrade would greatly help out and quite possibly solve your troubles.

A memory upgrade would do wonders! But the motherboard only supports simms (edo or FP), and i do not have any memory that old.. and it is quite expensive to come by here in australia.

If anyone else has any idea please let me know. :)

thanks again :)

Well, too bad. I got extra EDO laying around and you're right, it wasn't cheap. Turns out RAM is over rated. I actually did have too much. Anyway, the link you posted, you gotta be kidding right, are those your links, is the date correct? Dec 1999? Geesh, if it's not fixed by now roast some marshmellows!

Ok, so what about a diff psu? maybe not enough juice is causing faulty errors? should be easy to test

ok i sorted out this problem...

the motherboard is based on a SIS chipset and when windows boots it hangs as there seems to be a problem with the SIS ide drivers that are part of win98...

Now in win98 safe mode there is no cd-rom functionality so from a dos boot disc with cd-rom support i copied the motherboard cd rom files onto the hard drive and installed the Win9x ide drivers in safe mode...

win98 boots fine. :)

thanks to all that offered suggestions :)
