I used partition magic today to decrease the size of my fat32 partition, down from around 20.5 Gb to 19 Gb so I could install linux and play around with it. I went through the installation off my new cd (came free in the mail). Caldera Open Linux 2.4 distro- from Pogo.
The install took care of the partition for me(I had a free 1.5 Gb or so, and elected for the partition to take up that much size.
Well after the install was done, I tried to boot and got my regular BIOS routine and then the linux checkpoint deally- went down a checklist doing one thing and turning it another color, going down the list until all the items were done. Well when it got finished the screen went black and didn't come back... So I reboot with the "Rescue disc" I made during the linux installation. Same thing.
At this point I decide to use Red Hat or Mandrake and just use this nice cd as a frisbee. So I boot up with my win98 startup disk, delete the ~1.5 Gb "non-dos" partition and reboot without the disk.
I find I can't boot into win98 now! I go through regular BIOS routines and then a blinking cursor greets me.. interminably. I could sit and watch that all day and be happy, But I would really like to get back to playing some Quake...
I reboot with my win98 bootup and take an investigation. There are a whole lot more files in my root directory than I remember... So I delete the ones I don't like the names of
Well I reboot, I get a prompt that says "PRESS A KEY TO REBOOT". So I boot up with the win98 bootup disk and copy my system files again. Still PAKTR(Press a key...). I delete my config.cfg and autoexec.bat files and pop in some blank ones. Same thing... I check to make sure I've got my msdos.sys, IO.sys, and command.com. They are all there.
Still getting the PAKTR prompt at this point. Does anyone have a suggestion for me?
BTW, the PAKTR prompt comes before I see any Windows98 text or the splash screen.
I know this was a great narritive story that took a long time to type. Please help me out with a solution.
I do NOT want to fdisk and start over. I also do NOT wan't to reinstall windows- ruinning all my program installations- those downloads take a long time for a 56k user.
Thanks
