win95 to win98

it's been a while since i've had to do this, am wondering how to upgrade an old p3 from 95 to 98 without disturbing the desktop and start menu. seems like i could save the desktop and start menu directories, but how does one get the old registry info over without installing all the programs over again. or am i just whistling in the dark here and it can't be done! any advice willl be much appreciated.

Load up your Win95 and insert the Win98 CD, and it should prompt you to upgrade. I would make sure you have enough drive space so that it can back up your Win95 installation just in case the upgrade process screws up, and you will be able to revert back to Win95. This process keeps all your apps, so no re-installing required.

I'm not sure that you can do that because windows '95 uses FAT16 while '98 uses FAT32. So the drive needs to be repartitioned into FAT32 in order to install windows 98.

utterman is right alas... says its unupgradable from the full-install w98 cd, need the upgrade disc instead. ok here is my prob: old pc, 2 com ports on motherboard, only one works(9 pin). dead hardware issue with the other(25pin) i suspect. mouse in the one that works, com1. so a pci dual serial port card is installed. it adds com 2 and 3, no prob, BUT they don't work. cp/system/pciserialdevice/properties says device works, no conflicts, irq 10. cp/system/com2/properties says device works, but conflict with holder for pci steering, same irq. same with com3.

but for instance irq 11 has the modem com4 and a holder for pci steering, also irq 11 and modem works fine, no conflicts. what up with this??

i am trying to hook up serially to this pc with a palm 5x to transfer engine data retrieved with pda from evinrude ficht outboard. the pda works fine, i can make it work easily on my laptop (much more up-to-date machine of course, winme) . this pc is pre ps-2, never mind usb. anyone got any further thoughts, and i'll post this in the general hardware area also, and thanks.
