Win95 or Win98SE for Pentium 166

Hi,

I have an old pentium 166 (pre MMX) with a 1.2GB Disk and 48MB RAM. My question is, will it be ok to install Windows 98SE on this machine or is it best to stick with Windows 95 in this case. It's not going to be used a performance machine, just a very basic home PC with mainly Office 2000 and IE 5.5.

If I install Win98SE, will it suffocate the machine and eat up all the disk space At least I could use fat32.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

i wouldnt wanna run office 2000 on 48MB of ram using either of those OSs. actally i dont know if youre going to be able to run office 2000 with either of those OSs.

You will definitly have more performance if you stick with windows 95. It usually doesn't pay to upgrade the OS of a pc unless it was built with the new OS in mind.

Do you have both?

I would install Windows 98SE, but using the WIN98 LITE utility.

This basically, strips down Windows 98, and installs it without the Internet Explorer integration.. You can also integrate the Windows 95 shell into the Windows 98 install. Its pretty sweet, and it makes Windows 98 fly

its located at 98 Lite

I'd say Win95 OSR2!

I have an old Pentium 120 laptop with 32Mb - I tried Win98 on it but it was too slow so I went back to Win95 - it works much quicker.

BTW - I think Office 2000 will run okay on 48Mb RAM. but if possible see if you can get hold of Office 97 - it will remove some of the bloatware and run a bit faster.

well actually you dont NEED Win98, i know a guy who got all the upgrades for Win95 and he says it works grean now, doesnt freeze up so much

just get all the upgrades and patches you can for Win95

I have the same problem on a P100. I installed Win98 and the system really slowed down. I only have 32 MB and will probably increase that to 80 MB this weekend. I hope that helps but I wish I had Win95 back.

Thanks guys for all yo answers. I actually installed win98SE in the end with 98lite. 98lite is really great - thanks for this tip. Do you happen to know, after configuing Windows with 98lite, is it possible to delete the 98lite directory, which includes the win89 set up files or will this interfere with the current installation?

Thanks again.

I PM'd you..

You can safely delete the " C:\98LITE\ folder.

the only thing is, you will not be able to do the 98 Lite configuring , IF you need to change anything.. which will not be the case.. since Windows is already installed.
If you need to remove 98 Lite, you will have to reinstall 98 Lite though, since it will apparently be gone, after you delete the folder..

So, yes.. delete it.. I already have also.
