Win7: What's taking up so much space in c:\users?

JEDI

Lifer
ie:
c: \users\Jedi has 47gigs?!

I'm having problems with Office 2007. It's not letting me 'Save' or 'Save As' my files.
no error msgs. when I press the icon, nothing happens.

read a solution was to delete the User profile:
Computer properties > advanced system settings > user profiles

then log back in to build a fresh profile.

but before I do that, what am I deleting?
documents? stuff in my Downloads directory?

Treesize and others like it can be very handy. If the user is not one you use any longer, just go to the users in control panel and delete the user. If it has already been deleted, but the folder is still there, delete the folder.

I personally would want to know what is taking up the space though. If it were my machine, it would probably be a vmdk file.

Just off the top of my head of what could be using so much space is

1 - Music - especially itunes
2 - iDevices backup - if you use the computer to backup iphone ipads etc.
although
3 - Browser caches
4 - Outlook pst files, if using outlook

for example, when i did a run on my work laptop i get 20 GB on my user folder, and thats with my documents redirected to a different folder

C:\users\Jedi\appdata might be worth looking at. I've had the appdata folder blow up on me before on my 8.1 install and eat a lot of space. I think that Office also saves data to directories inside the appdata folder so you might want to check it out.

A great way to get a snap shot of whats taking up space is to install a program like Windirstat. It's free and has a small footprint. http://sourceforge.net/projects/windirstat/
